A lot of the old engineers I knew as a kid had fingers missing, mostly because of those flat belts. Didn't slow them down much that I noticed.
Molasses. In the workshop of a friend of my fathers I remember getting fed molasses on toast for lunch, cooked over the pot-belly in the middle of the shop. The molasses came from a gallon tin under a bench, it was used to dress those leather belts.
And to feed the local nippers.
