Evidential contrast leading to frustration

Causes grief when the green light for busses only comes on, and there's a motorbike at the front of the cue.

It's now legal for a motorcyclist to go on the bus light for exactly this reason. Shortly before it was made legal I got off a ticket for it by arguing that it was safer to not hold up the bus behind me.

Does anyone know, is it a bylaw in Auckland or false advertising on the part of bike shops that at one point or another almost all the bike shops have told me in one form or another that I can ride in cycle lanes?

Yeah i ride in cycle lanes all the time, and gone past many cops without issue. I thought we were allowed to use them? we need to sort this out, I don't wanna get a ticket!!

Mirrors certainly won't provide anything more than added visability(altho sheilding...would be damn cool! lol)...the same visability that all road going vehicles enjoy and are legally required to have (something do with studys proving that seeing approaching vehicle's...tends to reduce the chance of pulling out into there path by mistake)

Having spent a lot of time commuting on a bike in Dublin & Christchurch, I'd need to see some really convincing research before thinking that mirrors will have a real impact. My (horribly) biased opinion is that it isn't normally cyclists pulling out in front of cars causing the deaths, it is the car drivers either not seeing the cyclists or trying to overtake where it isn't on. Sure, there are going to be cases where the cyclist just pulls right to turn without checking, wobbles, dodges a pothole at the last minute or any other particular maneuver of the day. But this doesn't seem to be implicated when I hear of cyclists being mown down on the roads.

Cyclists are not going to check a mirror for every vehicle coming up behind just in case it is too far left and hasn't seen them. There's just no way most/all are going to be able to get the information they need to act on, while being able to ignore everything else. In short, mirrors won't help.

...cyclists may not have the leathers...but there on two wheels just like us, hence we as a group, should understand there vunerability a lil-bit more than most, and support there right to ride safely on public roads.

I actually think I'll go out and start painting out all cycle lanes. They make people feel safe going down the left side of stationary vehicles. When in fact is fecking dangerous.

life is dangerous. i dont tend to ride in traffic but if i had the chance to pass stationary cars on a motorbike i would take the risk. cant be any more dangerous then inhaling fumes

I got a [L]eed on a few weeks ago about motorcyclists just riding in unsafe places, so I went and sat on a particular cycle lane and waited for something to happen.

Just venting during the break I've given myself from the 90 minutes of paperwork it will take me to get the bloody thing ready for the court case.

I too am baffled Pritch....as to just how hard is it to make a link to limited rear visability and repeat accidents and fatalities involving being hit from behind.

Correlation does not mean causation.

It's hardly surprising that a majority of cyclists are killed or injured when hit from behind when generally the only thing that's going to hurt hitting front on, is riding into a parked car whilst looking behind themselves.

Given my experience that a high percentage of cyclists, even those that ride decent k's for fun and fitness, are incapable of holding a straight line without eyes front and both hands on the bars, I wouldn't be encouraging anything that would lead to more "wandering"

Dont shoot the messenger, from all accounts Rastucat is one of the good bastards, most of us take directives from further up the food chain no matter what line of work you are in and everyone has their specialty feilds, I am glad we have a keen motorcyclist in a position

Just cos Rastuscat is focused on motorcycle riders safety...sure as shit does NOT make him a nazi cop!, he's actually a full time rider who just happens to work (an eat donuts) for the police....he's not only one of the good ones out there in the force, he's also a senior KB member that most of us respect and thank for his knowledge & time he shares with us all.
