They are dangerous enough with all the pinch points and cars thinking that nothing faster than 30kmph is coming. Add in the debris that tends to build up an the fact that they are made for a vehicle that is about 6 inches narrower than your motorcycle.

The inherent safety for the cyclist is supposed to be that the general flow of traffic is going faster than them so can see them clearly as they approach. Not so if you are moving faster than the traffic.

Even on a push bike if I find I am going faster than the traffic by more than 20 kms I slow down, or if it is safer hit the right hand side of the lane instead.

I rely on myself for safety, not others. I don't buy the "you should of seen me" line, I always think, accidents will be my fault* as I didnt see the guy turning with out checking)

I have been watching some of that road cops programme lately. The TV people are maxing their investment; it's a repeat of a repeat. But it's not getting any less bloody depressing.

The cops stop some dude in an unregistered, unwarranted, shit box, or he's pissed, or all of the above, and while the cop is in his car doing his checks our loser says to the camera, "I should have gone the other way."

No. He shoulda got the car fixed, or got a taxi. Thats not a one-off, it's almost a regular thing on that show.

Actually, I'm not sure that it does. In any scenario where a cyclist and other vehicles are sharing a roadway, there will be a speed disparity. And therefore there will always be vehicles approaching from the rear. A sane and sensible cyclist is usually pretty far to the left anyway, and has the sphincter well puckered (because of cunts whizzing past at speed 300mm away). We KNOW there are people behind us. We KNOW how vulnerable we are. In my years of communting I never once thought "wish I had a mirror" (usually it was "wish I had a rocket launcher"). Ears are the best defence in my experience. You can hear stuff from behind you if you're listening. One reason I never used a music player communting. It blunts the spidey sense.

shit yeah. When I cycle commuted I actually planned a route that minimised big roads and traffic interaction as much as poss. And if I felt threatened and it was an option, I would rather go up on the footpath than round a parked car into the lane....

Came across a lovely cyclist the other night. Dark stormy night, tiny little red flashing light at both ends. I assume she had followed the letter of the law, but it was only luck that stopped her from becoming a hood ornament. I'm sure she would have been quite pissy if I'd put her in a wheel chair for life, but I can't say I'd have felt any guilt.
