Mostly done in by the US Police departments insistence that police bike use a particular size of tyre (ie H-D sized) that the Apollo had far to much power for.
Berliner Motors (the Ducati importers in the US) wanted to tender for supply of police bikes and they convinced Ducati to build the Apollo.
