    -Apocalypse Now
You had to see them when they were new and relevant - some movies don't age that well.

I sort of saw 2001 - it was in 16mm in a back yard in Mt Eden (a mate had a sound projector and he'd hire the film), and we'd all dropped a tab before we "watched" it..............buggered if I know what it was all about, but, we all had a good time anyway......

Hmmm, saw 'Plan 9 from Outer Space' and 'Robot Monster' as a double feature at Charley Gray's back in the day...saw Robot Monster first and thought it was hilariously bad, then Plan 9 but that was just baaaad (might have been bad movie fatigue by that stage).

Another observation: Jim Carrey is actually quite a good actor when he's not trying to be funny, shame about the rest of his stuff.

Also: thought 'Event Horizon' was pretty bad, way to take an interesting idea and turn it into a slasher film; and 'What we do in the Shadows', the whole film was the same joke over and over and over...IMHO.

I thought Gravity and Avatar were good.

There was something I rented a month back that I did not finish watching as it was so crap - I appear to have blocked the name from my memory!

Roger Ebert gave the film a negative review giving the film 2 stars out of 4 stating "The script creates a sense of foreboding and afterboding, but no actual boding"
    Sums it up nicely

I saw 2001 in Chch on Panorama (big surround screen, slightly curve) under the same condition (purple pyramid I think) ... all I remember is the amazing images of colour coming at me real fast .. and the planets all lining up ...

    because it was great.

You saw a film called "HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN": What did you expect? War and Peace? Anna Karenina? because with HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN you got exactly what it said on the tin you would get. Rutger Hauer as a hobo, with a shotgun and blowing people the fuck away.

Seriously, a lot of you people don't seem to understand the concept of the genre film. A genre film only fails if it does not live up to expectation: so, MAD MAX 3: THUNDERDOME fails. So does HUDSON HAWK, or any number of comic book adaptations. I would also argue MACHETE fails by that account, Rodriguez and Trejo notwithstanding So, lack of budget or dire special effects or crap acting or a bad script do not necessarily render a film "bad"... though those items don't generally help. For example, PLAN 9 and ATTACK OF THE KILLER TOMATOES both succeed in their genre despite their grave (yes, pun intended - sorry) failings, which ar myriad.

Another great little genre movie SWAMP THING. also has Adrienne Barbeau boobs.... and its the 70's: you know its all her.

the films that I have hated have usually been big budget, over hyped piles of shit that do not live up to their own expectations, let alone that of their intended audience.

I would include AVATAR in that list. Also the MATRIX sequels which were godawful and did not make sense by even their own internal "logic"

    a recent example: SNOWPIERCER.

It looked great, but you walk out of the theatre going, wait, whut?

    because [spoiler alert]

if you think about the ending for even one second you realise that the ending has condemned every last human on the planet to death.

I have to agree, but a bit less so with Gravity.
Avatar is 3hrs of blue, but the underlying theme of greed over good is impressive. Sorry if my inner greenie is coming out. I'll make sure I wipe correctly.

Gravity is scientifically correct and has the backing of a lot of astronauts and geeks. The fact that the "scenery" is splendid, certainly helps.
