I did it over New Year, the gravel part is mostly on the flat, only a couple of kms in the twisty hills.

Rode it a month ago. Easy gravel. About 10km. Good ride.
Thanks guys ,the large fatty on the bike(OOPS) rear wheel ,gives a bit of greif with thick shingle, got caught when Higgins were remetaling the Whangamomona road'.
I was through there in January. The gravel was OK, one of the other guys measured it and said it was twelve kilometres. I remembered the metal section as being more like hard dirt but the grader must have been through. When we got to that section I slowed down and was almost immediately passed by a BMW650GS. That didn't bother me at all, but then I was passed by two Harleys and thought I really ought to pull my finger out.
The road between Marakopa and Waitomo had several lots of roadworks in progress at the time.

That would be my experience too. The first time I went through, on an SV650S, the grader had been through and it was slow going. Last time, on the gixxer, there were wide wheel tracks free from any loose stuff all the way through.
Both times it wasn't that hard to deal with regardless of the gravel.

Went through about 1 year ago on a GS, It is along ride and you dont pass many people on the way.
I would prefer to ride it with company, as if you broke down or whatever it maybe a while before you got help.
The dirt section was easy, mostly flat, well graded, you could ride it on a street bike .
Great ride though. mostly 70km stuff.
I did it on my scooter this January. Was brilliant.

It would seem that the gravel section is good unless freshly graded.which happened again too me yesterday going up the Tiahape road too my daughters place ,fat slicks on sports bikes sure dont like thick metal with no wheel tracks ,dang this is the third time this has happened on this side road, sure dont want too get way down past Marokapa for that to happen.![]()
