    Rear fender eliminator legal?

I'm looking at getting a rear fender eliminator and have seen mentioned online that in some countries it is a requirement that the rear brake light be behind the rear tyre.

Is this the case in NZ too?

I have looked on the NZTA website and have not seen anything to do with this apart from needing to have a licence plate and lights and don't want to be swapping fenders every time I go to get a warrant if I do install a fender eliminator.

    Update:

I went back to the NZTA website and on their in-service certification pages it just says that the licence plate needs to be lit by a white light, visible form 20m away and that the brake light and indicators need to be in the usual working order.

I'm sure I'm stating the obvious (and I know the question has been resolved so it's obsolete), but feel compelled to mention it anyway: "getting away with it" is different than actually being legal. Getting the little WOF sticker is only "proof" that the vehicle was up to standard at the time of inspection.

A vehicle be outside of WOF condition (and be ticketed for something) at any time, even with a valid sticker. Just think of tyre wear.

Whether a cop or insurance assessor would actually notice any particular fault or modification (or whether it'd affect any claim due to being material or not) is another issue.

Or, more relevantly (that is, this is the stuff pertaining to whether you'll get a ticket)

Must be upright (no funny angles), visible at all times (i.e. throughout rear wheel travel), etc.

So the ones that tuck the plate right under the seat are probably a no-no (although many get away with them). Your garden variety 'tail tidy' is fine.
