    King of Levels Rd 1

We were tapped out in top slowly gaining on Goober/Matt but rapidly running out of running out of road, we slowly edge alongside and then in front just as we run out of room in the passing lane, Will flicks them a txt “get used to that view” and then we carry on to Levels

-5 degrees coming through Temuka and no warmer at the track, we get the body work out of the van and frost starts forming on it

Sidecar up on the stands and doing the checks we’d normally already have done but due to being away in Sunny Dunedin for week we were a bit behind schedule

All the checks done, nuts and bolts tightened, fuel checked, chain lubed and we’re set to go

    P1

I don’t know what it is about the first practice of the season but I always end it feeling like an uncoordinated munter but my first thought when I nail it is “I should have closed my helmet vents because my head is bloody freezing”

Alex is off and hammering it, we take it a bit easier and find we’re getting front end slides off the end of the back straight which I haven’t ever experienced before

Alex/Andy bump the chair wheel over the kerb there and that then turns into a full 360 degree spin

Goober/Matt seem to be slowly gaining on us and the grid sheet confirms it

    Alex/Andy P1, Goober/Matt P2, Warwick/Will P3, Kai/Matt P4, Phil/Steve P5 and James/Hayley P6

Bit of a check over and find Will makes an alteration to the rear as there’s a huge difference in tyre temp across the width

    Race 1

Kai/Matt are so hard on gear don’t even make it up to the dummy grid before there’s an ominous knocking coming from the bottom end meaning their day is already over

Lined up behind Alex/Andy, flags down and we go, Goober/Matt light up the rear and we blow past them straight away into T1

Alex/Andy don’t seem to be trying too hard and we pull out and pass them, Goober/Matt try a pass next lap and we run side by side down the straight and we go back into the lead

We can hear him right behind us and then lap 3 the yellow flags out onto the start/finish straight and we see him parked off the side, it isn’t until a lap later I see Matt walking alongside the track a few hundred metres further back I work out what’s happened and that Matt owes beer

Alex/Andy make the pass on us with a couple of laps to go and slowly edge away for the win while we run in second

    Alex/Andy 1st, Warwick/Will 2nd, James/Hayley 3rd, Phil/Stephen 4th

A few checks, refuel, another rear wheel adjustment and we’re set to go again

    Race 2

Goober/Matt drop back a spot and put me up in P2, he’s planning on taking it easy to see how Matt goes after his tarmac surfing

Alex/Andy decide not to dick about this time and are into it hard from flag drop, we chase them for a few laps but they drop us off bit by bit, we’ve got a big gap back to James/Hayley who’re dicing with Phil/Stephen

Goober/Matt have pulled in with Matt’s bruising meaning he has no strength in his right arm to move about

    Alex/Andy 1st, Warwick/Will 2nd, James/Hayley 3rd, Phil/Stephen 4th

Few more checks, more gas and another adjustment to the back

30 minutes before we go out the temperature at the track is 6 degrees and we reckon it’s dropped by the time we get out

    Race 3

Alex/Andy put the hammer down hard again but we stick a bit closer to them although following him down the straight he goes in a bit deeper off the end under brakes

Goober has found another Matt to replace the first one he broke and is running around in third

Last lap and we’re still close enough to have a go at Alex/Andy when I blow the down change off the straight and he pulls a few extra bike lengths, I finally find a gear and wick it back up and around to the hairpin pull back all the space we’ve lost plus a bit more

Next left and through to the chicane and we’re about 10mm off their tray onto the start/finish straight and pull out to pass them before the line

Alex admitted later he thought we were much further back and had eased off a bit so I doubt he’ll make it that easy next time

    Warwick/Will 1st, Alex/Andy 2nd, Goober/Matt2 3rd, James/Hayley 4th, Phil/Stephen 5th

A great day out despite the cold and some good results

So I did an oil and filter change in prep for the next round, motor is idling for bit and I noitce the temp isn't coming up, check and top up the water and it takes about .5L, temp comes up the drops suddenly, check the water level and it's down again, check sight glass and the oil is all milky, shut it down and drain it, looks like the head gaskets gone, so we're swapping an engine today

Oil that I originally drained was still mint with no water so fuck knows how it happened that suddenly, although we have had to top it up 100-200 mls at the last couple of rounds so maybe the head gastket was about to blow, anyway gasket is ordered and on the way and Grumph will pick it up in the next couple of days, hopefully it isn't too fucked

Are you still running the K4 motors, or did you get those K7s you were looking at a while ago?

Still the same K4 just with a freshen up a while back, didn't have the money for the upgrade in the end

Does it have a water cooled oil cooler, or air cooled? Pinky split a heat exchanger & swapped fluids a few years back.

No it doesn't, water disappeared pretty quick so I am hoping it is just a gasket and not something more serious, spare motor is already in and running

What did you use to clean the oil out of the radiator? just flush it a few times?, there's an oily film in the water now but doesn't look too bad

I have often (not for ages now) had to deal with complete cooling systems chock full of thick grey porridge from when BMW m20 engines used to crack the head between the cam gallery & the water jacket & continue to be driven for three months.
After putting a new head on we would put two litres of red floor cleaning detergent in them & give them an hour at 1800rpm with the garden hose in the coolant tank & the bleed screw open, never ever took a radiator out to get it cleaned & there were no premature water pump failures etc.
When pinky got a gut full of water I did the radiator that way, but with a bit less detergent. I also had to do nine oil changes after a two or three minute run before the oil came out clear, that's near enough 27 litres of oil & four oil filters, lucky it was sponsor product.
Work back from there depending on the severity of the contamination.

Cooling system doesn't seem to bad just changed the water once again

First oil change and you can still it contamination in probably from whats left in the oil cooler so I'll do a few more until it clears

Fucking excellent, might have munted two motors in double quick time, no oil pressure in the spare, the light went out when it was first fired up, but the second time after a bit I noticed it was on

Took the pressure switch out and wound it over and not a drop coming out, what a fucking fantastic weekend
