Protest at Kaitaia airport

Evidently there's ( all of a sudden ) a Land claim regarding the governance of the land surrounding the Kaitaia airport by the local Maoris waving their hand made flag.

What's all that about?

You may find out that it is actually that piece of land that is in question. Apparantly the NZ Government requisitioned the hapu's land in the 1940s to build an aerodrome for use during the war and promised it back at the end of the war. It was never returned and my understanding is that while it is subject to the current settlement, half the land is being vested in a neighbouring hapu who never owned the land in the first place. If that is a true summary of the facts then I can see why the local hapu are a bit tetchy. No way do I support the action they've taken but I can understand their passion. (Oh, I'm as white as a snowlflake incidentally).

I have flown around that area in a Pulsar LSA & been in the audience of a fantastically prepared presentation of aviation in northland over the last 80 years which was the result of many years of research by a northland doctor & aviation enthusiast.
I have landed on both airfields & no, it's not the same one, the one I'm referring to is at Kaikohe.
I did purchase a great book at Kaitaia airport, called Earlybird, by Phil Lightband, a aerial top dressing pioneer in NZ & northland resident. I'd recommend it to anyone with an interest in aviation.
Anyway, the niggers have been arsed out of there, so all good.
