The issue I bought up was they were focussed on keeping up with each other and if you have ever seen a group ride especially on sports bikes high speed is necessary to keep up.

But generally speaking the faster you go the less safe the speed is as stopping distances become longer if shit happens. Sure people die under the speed limit but the chances are still less due to having more time to stop if you have any time at all.

Yes, but you can't get from A to B without some speed.
How much speed is OK? Obviously you need enough to get you to your destination in a timely manner, but not so much that the risk of crashing rises to unacceptable levels.
The trick is to give due consideration to the conditions and moderate your speed appropriately - clearly the subject of this thread came to grief which suggests that he was most likely travelling too fast for the conditions, that doesn't mean that it isn't possible to ride fast in different conditions while keeping the risk of misfortune low.
