At least I'm capable of MAKING IT.

Matchy is apart and new casting for drive side crankcase cast, heat treated and ready for machining. Been working on other shit so it's taken a back seat. I'm into it now. Also got issues with camshafts and cam followers so may have to re-think that as well. Made in Hamilton takes time sometimes....along with motivation, which can also be lacking occasionally, as I also like riding my shed full

I'm really questioning the term "classic" here. The machinery available to you is far superior to anything around at the time the Matchless was made.

As you know I was somewhat surprised at how OE the cam train was....They never had a good name for reliability in that area as well as the rest...Just that other areas broke first.
Given how low you rev it, roller folowers may work but I've never had a problem with hardened mushroom followers on CI cams - or on eutectic built up lobes for that matter.
And yeah, motivation....um, well, I'll get around to it....

To be fair, he does make it all himself, rather than write out cheques for stuff that barely resembles the original component in any way from companies like Maney & TT industries.

i'd add to Bob's reply to this that it's not the machinery it's made on - the factories could have made stuff to the same standards then - it's actually the broader knowledge base accessible now. Making replacement stuff for old machinery still requires quite a lot of hard thinking and a hell of a lot of experience to get it right first go...

There's actually no need to rev it past about 6K as it doesn't make a lot of grunt over that, it makes really good power/torque with the 90 degree set up. The AMC singles ran mushroom followers and CI cams, the twin now runs Long Run Nitrided 4140 shafts and large radius foot/pivoting followers made in case hardened Bohler EPB100 steel. It's only the fierce rate of lift that's giving me grief. Mind you I made the followers in 1986 so maybe they have reached end of life

And yes the other shit in them normally 'fell out' long before any inferior cam train could give trouble

So you have never made or modified anything to may it faster or more reliable

Put about another 20degrees duration into the cam - but make most of it better ramping. AMC were never very good at cams.

FWIW the G45 with a much better bottom end than the road twins was notorious for breaking the valve train. Softer ramping with longer duration makes them live I hear.

The G45 was notorious for breaking the rocker posts off the heads due to their fierce roller cam set-up.

My thoughts exactly on the slower ramp/duration thing...two great minds think alike

And yes Drew I know what you were referring to but as I have access to the good gear to make things with....please don't ask me to go back to the worn out old shit that AMC made their POS on. That's why the British industry went down the gurgler in the first place.
