Friday's rant !! TV serials. McClouds Daughters on the jones channel (in the background). The wife isn't even watching it.

Still, things could be worse, at least no re-runs of "Close to home" or "The Young Doctors" YET!

I heard of a team leader from the wharf today that has to buy the smoko groceries as part of his job.
He must shop in his work hi vis & safety gear & had to be inducted with all the relavent paperwork at the local supermarket.

    Site inductions work.

Visitor injuries are lowered....because no one can be fucked with the induction, so they don't go to sites.

...when the first H and S shit was passed in wankliament some months back I happened to be in Chch, CBD at about 10am, wandering about , waiting for a new exhaust on my truck to be fitted...I peered through the hoardings at a new building being erected...a big site, tower crane in the corner and some fuckwit with easily two ton of 20mm rebar resting it on his shoulder, no man to direct crane and the crane luffed out to about its max...one glitch with the crane op and the silly cunt on 16.50 an hour was squashed or buckled...within 20 meters of the expendable cunt, were half a dozen cocksuckers with ties and clipboards...what a load of wank...blanket moneysuck of the half asleep nation and no one stands up to say ought...what a sad state this place has become...when sub continentals and the mongol race have ended up buying us out and make the fucking rules it will be a bit too late to moan...

Best thing on television at the moment is The Undateables. I'm not saying it is good, I am just saying it is the best thing on tv.

It's OK, they must have done some minimum costing, and come to the conclusion that we can all afford the extra compliance cost.

    Eh?

Personally I'm planning to phase out actual employees. Not 'cause I can't afford to be responsible for their safety, (I can't) but because I won't be held responsible for someone else's behaviour.

Nor will I allow anyone else to be responsible for mine. Which means anyone with advice about how I should behave can fuck right off.

Not to mention the time taken to fil in the WSSP and identify and isolate the hazards, means there is a lot less time available to do productive work that could result in injuries.

Put a health and safety charge on each invoice.

And if one more person tells me I could go to prison because someone who works for me has an accident, I will headbutt them.

    That's a fucking excellent idea.

There's a version of H&S used by some called "take 5", where you supposedly take 5 minutes to evaluate risk before beginning work. A client expected me to adopt it, in line with their site best practice. I asked for professional help in initiating the process, and got the site OSH mgr for the next morning.

He missed the 10:00 morning staff meeting. He also missed morning tea break. I had had every intention of him missing lunch too, but he got all huffy and stormed off. There was no way he could bitch to his boss about it, I was absolutely by the book.

All I'd done was continue to raise quite possible incident causes. And while the root causes are no different on a DG class 1 zone 1 site than any other the consequences are all off the fucking scale. The point I was making was simply that following their own procedures inevitably resulted in an insurmountable hurdle which made carrying out the work impossible. Unless you pretended to not anticipate a perfectly obvious potential issue.

That's true for that site to this day. But I dont work there any more. Not because I can't work as safely as necessary consistent with acceptable results, but because I'm simply not prepared to jump through idiotic cookie cutter hoops and then lie in order to avoid the absurd costs involved in doing it "their way".

That was a decade ago. And about now, after this latest round of absurdly ill conceived bullshit it'll probably occur to you that I may be running out of clients by now. Reckon I've got a couple more years before I retire. Think I'll make it?

Its called a HS&E levy, and is becoming more and more common, and its a fair charge IMHO because you are responsible for customers safety while they are on the premises which they should pay for. Even if you send work to someone in a different town you have to make sure that they are conducting the work in a safe manner, so outwork should have a levy attached too, or a margin on top of their levy when/ if they start charging it. So profit can and should be made from HS&E, so its not necessarily a bad thing.

It's another nail in the nz manufacturing coffin. There is still far too many people making wrong decisions on their own. I have to hand hold a lot of people at my place of work. Even with clear and simple instructions people have their own agenda (thinking about family and the weekend). People hate being told to do something. Any excuse to being responsible for their own actions. I have a great difficulty getting people to acknowledge anything. However I can see a time that soon every job will have to have a paper trail, the hard part will be getting people to sign their name. I see that even though the management can now be sued that the employee who disregards instructions can be charged to. The hard part will be the paper war and people owning up to their responsibility. (It's why I have to go on site myself for my job to look out for my employees. Whereas the old days I could left them alone)
It will increase costs and will only be a drag that the end user will have to pickup. Will the same be applied to overseas employers?
