Numbers nobody has used are safe to grab.
Numbers that were used last year may lead to conflicts at some stage as there are people who only roll up once a season.

the way to claim a number you want is to turn up with it on your bike and race with it.
try and get a number that isn't used in any class if at all possible and stick to two digit numbers, if we have to revert to manual lap scoring three digit numbers make things more difficult than they need to be.

Not for ages, the best bet is to look at the past two years results on mylaps and pick a number that hasn't been used in that time. Ideally we'd have no overlaps between any classes and if you plan to run F4 as most people do make sure no overlap between C, B, and F4 in case you get kicked up a grade.

If you're looking for a new number, like Henk suggested, look at what's actually being run.

The below images are taken from the Auckland F4 A grade, Auckland F4 B grade and North Island F4 series.

Whilst you might be able to run a number in Auckland which is run by a Welly rider, this isn't a great idea as you'll clash at the GP and North Island series which isn't to be missed! Which is why I included the North Island series riders.
