    For Richer or Pora

Lets face it, he was probably better off in Prison, he has come away from it a better Man/Father and is a multi millionaire. Even he would not have foreseen that 21 years ago.

He was a prolific car thief and MM prospect so chances are he would have wound up inside at some stage, only to be released at a later date broke and looking to re offend again.

Teina Pora was innocent of the crimes for which he was convicted and imprisoned.

$2 million is not enough for 21 years of lost life and a trashed reputation. Indeed at current interest rates, invested, it's not going to provide a massive annual income for him after tax.

Pora got stitched up for sure but in the long run what would have been his outcome had he been left alone?

He appears to be getting (what he deserves?) well compensated.

It will be interesting to see what he does from here out!

    Meanwhile back in the jungle:

Good law abiding kids get student loans (debt) struggle to make their way pay for their own training lodgings and food transport etc.

Criminals get free lodgings clothing and food get free trade career training work experience breaks and a job at the end of it.

All sounds balanced to me - yeah right.

So - you can spend 21 years with:

No unlocked doors - you have to stand by EVERY door and wait for a guard to open it

You have to eat when you are told and eat what you are given ...

You are not allowed a cellphone

You are not allowed Internet access

You have to sleep shit and pee in the same room ...

    Surrounded by criminals ...

Lights go out when the guards say ...

Your cell is searched on a random basis ..

You only see the outside at rec time - when the guards get around to letting you out ...

You have to wear what they give you ...

Guards supervise your visits. Contact (i.e. touching your visitor) is a privilege

Arguign with the guards means loss of privilege

And yet, I'd choose a student loan instead of jail everytime

Yeah but put yourself in his shoes. What choices did he have? Shit, he didn't probably didn't even know what choices there were for him.

Mum dead at 4, dad never there, fetal alcohol damage, an upbringing where he was bounced around various grandparents, boys homes, and an aunt.

Falling in with the mob (probably the only 'family' he ever knew) wasn't just likely, it was almost inevitable.

Then one day he finds a bat in a drain, and his aunt puts him up to the cops insisting black and blue he did it, even though he didn't. Fuck me, if he didn't already feel alienated by his kin then, that put the nail in the coffin.

So tell me more about these guardian angels that swing about rescuing impressionable 16 year old car thieves from the clutches of the mob.

Yeah but the trouble is, even once you're convicted of a crime, you have the right to be given the benefit of the doubt - in terms of wanting to turn your life around.

And if you've got someone who does want to go a different direction, but The State treats em like shit, it's not exactly an incentive.

So how do we differentiate* between those who have the inclination to contribute to society, and rotten scumbags that just want to watch the world burn?

He actually insisted that he did it, why the fuck you would do that is anyone's guess. Even if he didn't, it wasn't smart & hardly surprising he did a stretch.
Guarantee he's broke & in deep shit within 5 years.

Plus: all his "mates" quite correctly believed him a snitch.
The original idea was to snitch for cash after all.

After watching the last couple of episodes of the 40 yrs of study that's being done on 1012 new borns, with their astounding results being replicated in other countries, it appears regardless of where you live or which so called level of society you come from, those early years (nurturing/loved etc) are crucial to our outcome.

The area researched on teenagers fascinated me and my long held view of chucking the little buggers into jail has changed and it seems our justice system is starting to agree.

Teenagers simply don't think the same as adults (Sweden class under 25s as children) we probably all did stupid shit as teenagers and luckily many of us didn't get locked up for it, it seems once you have been incarcerated your life takes a different path judging by our very poor success rate in those being released.

Time will tell, but research suggests once we get past those impulsive non thinking teen age years ( and having a decent upbringing) the majority become reasonable members of society.

Personal security guards. Better than my rottweiler at home!

You have to eat when you are told and eat what you are given...
Healthy eating dietary meal so I don't get diabetes and die of fat-ass-ness

You are not allowed a cellphone
But allowed Sky TV and an XBox. Mt Eden is pretty awesome you know.

You are not allowed Internet access
No porn. OK fine you get a point for this one.

You have to sleep shit and pee in the same room ...
Simple lifestyle living space. Don't have to worry about gardening and weeding.

    Surrounded by criminals ...
    Making friends

Lights go out when the guards say...
Bed time stories too? No? OK another point for you.

Your cell is searched on a random basis ..
    House cleaning!

You only see the outside at rec time - when the guards get around to letting you out ...
Mandatory exercise and smoko time. Hell, I don't even get much fresh air and walking time at my current white-collar job.

You have to wear what they give you ...
You kidding... Free laundry and clothings too? Awesome! Steve Jobs also had one style of clothing anyways.

Someone wants to see me? Awww...

Arguign with the guards means loss of privilege
    Then don't argue aye?

    Sad but true.

The $100,000 per year inside formula is based on the amount paid to Arthur Allan Thomas. That was a long time ago now and if corrected for inflation would be about double what Pora has been offered.

The money will be placed in a trust in an attempt to control his outgoings but that will only be as good as the other members of the trust. If he buys even a modest house in Auckland that'll be half his money gone.
