It's more to do with the cost of land and storage. I started a whole another thread about this awhile back. Basically the cost per km of road/rail/coastal shipping is very similar in NZ.
With rail and coastal shipping the freight needs to be devanned/double handled/offloaded before delivery, this means more staff, time and cost. And the cost is only going up every day with osh compliance and other factors.
Without trucks many of our roads would still deteriotate due to construction, eg pumice base around taupo area gets munted everytime it rains hard. There would still be a lot of work required but no one to pay for it....
The greenies say we don't pay our fair share anyway so it seems a false economy to have an alledged conspiracy where a govt takes in 'donations' more than the cost of looking after the donor......

If you've got a few million cubic metres of quality soil.basefill/whatever that might be of use somewwhere else makes sense to take it somewhere it might get used. Even if you just pushed it into the sea it wouldnt be a simple task. You'd still need a lot of extra heavy mobile plant, skilled operators and a workable plan. It could alter coastal erosion apetterns and undermine a seperater good piece of road further along.

Awesome sauce. More fishing points for tourists.

It never occurred to me that disaster relief/rescue should be dished out on a racial preference basis until today, but I'll be looking out for it in the future.
Point is, they hooked their own out & fucked off, leaving everybody else to go & get fucked. Its not the Kiwi way, but then theyre not Kiwis.

They have the base material right on hand to build a road further from the base of the cliff by using the material that is currently causing the problem. But im no roading engineer.

Hows that racist? The racists are the ones that selected a certain race to rescue & left the rest, That's racist, not the guy that's pointing it out.
But then theyre not white, so how could they possibly be racist?
What part of their self serving ignorance do you find appealing?

Funnily enough "the governments" are "responsible" for their "citizens". the same shit will/has/does happen all over the world.

tsunami in bali? (or wherever the fuck it was that whatever the fuck it was that happened) NZ consul deals with -dun-dun-dun- NZ citizens; earthquake in japan, america evacuates -dun-dun-dun- american citizens.

it's not racist. it's just one of the "benefits" of signing up to be a "citizen"

we don't have the one world jewvernment just yet, ol' buddy.

I think you'll find that they probably uplifted Chinese people based on their nationality rather than their ethnicity or the shape of their eyes.

I was talkng to one of my neighbours today who, up until very recently, was the manager of Mainfreight up here in whangas. Anyway, as a consequence of the ferries not moving freight, the depots in wellies and picton choke up with all the freight that still goes as far as it can. Then when the flow starts to move again it is the stuff that was at the depot first that ends up being the last to ship out. Lots of angry phone calls ensue etc
