It's more to do with the cost of land and storage. I started a whole another thread about this awhile back. Basically the cost per km of road/rail/coastal shipping is very similar in NZ.
With rail and coastal shipping the freight needs to be devanned/double handled/offloaded before delivery, this means more staff, time and cost. And the cost is only going up every day with osh compliance and other factors.
Without trucks many of our roads would still deteriotate due to construction, eg pumice base around taupo area gets munted everytime it rains hard. There would still be a lot of work required but no one to pay for it....
The greenies say we don't pay our fair share anyway so it seems a false economy to have an alledged conspiracy where a govt takes in 'donations' more than the cost of looking after the donor......
