Don't think the inland road is going to fix everything either. Heard a resident along the road on radio saying that the last time SH1 was closed, they had buses and trucks getting jammed on the tight bends. Heavy tow outfits did well out of it.
have they even decided which road they are going to put their resources into first?
Agree about the Inland Rd to Kaikoura - provide access for the town and allow for rebuilding/repairing. Also allow for the tourist activities to start again as soon as other infrastructure is up and running. Yes, you'll have to drive in and out on the same road but if you want to go dolphin watching then you'd do that.
Now for an outsider's point-of-view: A couple of nights ago the news showed contractors working on it from either end - a couple of father/son teams - and they seemed to now what they were doing - getting the road passable for heavy vehicles and four-wheel drive vehicles. Then along comes civil defence and the road is closed because of possible slips... so why aren't they getting on with dealing with the possible slips? I'm sure the contractors have experience to deal with slips that keep moving as you clear them and while the aftershocks continue. I don't imagine the contractors are going to put themselves at risk.
The Lewis Pass route seems to be a temporary solution - how often is that road closed in winter?
Get the road from Cheviot to Oaro open and usable - can be properly repaired over time but in the meanwhile is usable by those who live along that road. Same for the road south to Clarence.
As I said, an outsider's point-of-view... but I do wonder how much help government earthquake recovery and civil defence are? Or are they a hindrance to people getting their lives back in order and on with doing their things?
I do think that the people of Canterbury have the patience of Job...
Geo engineers know their stuff pretty well these days, if it's not safe it's not safe....
I've been at a major slip on Taupo Rd minutes after it happened. Standing there you can hear the hill side creaking and crumbling even tho it looks like all that's falling has fallen. At a later date there has been substantial slips in same place. It don't take much dirt to be dead or buried alive....

Yeah inland road makes sense, hopefully someone in govt has foresight to blast the hell out of the tips of those hills on coastal road and build a tourist and truck friendly double lane super expressway along the coast.
Rail needs level ground so they will have to open up and fix the rail line anyway, so it makes sense to spend money on road that provides maitainsnce access to rail.

Coastal shipping yep.
And, realistically, that's the only viable option in the short term and vessels and shipping company's are already working on moving freight . The show has to go on .
The SH1 main trunk road won't be open for a while and rail, even longer. I'm wondering how this will effect the business operations of Kiwi-rail and their staff in the South Island seeing as how the mainline has been effectively cut-off, hmm.
Best place to plan your holiday this Christmas ? I'd say Kaikoura, should be accommodation available and they need all the help they can get ...
Thinking about swapping my road bike for a dual purpose now
