Mike Hosking (instant expert on everything) made a plea last night for the coastal route to be replaced by a new inland route Marlbourough to Canterbury. Minister for Everything Steven Joyce was saying this morning that the proposed inland route would involve high altitudes and would consequently be closed too frequently due to snow.
An early indication that they are looking at repair rather than replace?
They built the coastal route where it is because it was the cheapest option at the time.
It seems extremely unlikely that the cost of building a complete new highway through significantly more wrinkly countryside would be cheaper or quicker than repairing a couple of percent of the damaged existing one.
I'm not sure if the Molesworth option is any less prone to natural disaster anyway, is it? I mean it's probably wrinkly for a good reason....
Go soothingly on the grease mud, as there lurks the skid demon
