Key's already said repair is the favoured option. You could call the coast road TINA...because basically it was the only feasible route to use.
Sure we know what the topography of the ranges is better now with satellite imaging but it's still the only route feasible for rail.

Incidentally on TV3 the other night they showed a local getting to Min's Bin - past a looted train......Didn't take long did it.

They built the coastal route where it is because it was the cheapest option at the time.

It seems extremely unlikely that the cost of building a complete new highway through significantly more wrinkly countryside would be cheaper or quicker than repairing a couple of percent of the damaged existing one.

I'm not sure if the Molesworth option is any less prone to natural disaster anyway, is it? I mean it's probably wrinkly for a good reason....

No notification other than in news reports

The same situation existed in Christchurch, where the only option was to insure with the same company as the previous owners, and it involved lots of paperwork. Most houses had been inspected by EQC so once you managed to obtain the paperwork you could send it on, there was usually a building inspection required as well, if it didn't have EQC paperwork or it was uninsured then it just got too painful.

It should be headline news, not buried in the business section. I can't be bothered with Stuff much these days.

Also the option to transfer policies is not available this time. It's a hard and fast embargo with no option available.

I'd also like to point out that the house we're buying is nowhere near the epicentre in Kaikoura. It's ridiculous cowardice on the part of Insurance companies and it's supported by Government to protect EQC from having to payout on earthquake damaged homes where the title was in transit.

Also, what's with the cunty, "nyah, nyah, nyah" tone of the reply? Are you an Insurance Theft company employee? If so, I hope you die.

So the 'deal' in the second article doesn't apply to you? Seems a bit of a waste of time reporting it then.

No intent to be cunty and definitely not an insurance company employee, more a dissatisfied customer in recent years, and I'm absolutely certain that I'll die.

    I am dying too.
The deal is actually a lie. The Real Estate agent rang up ranting at my wife this morning so our lawyer went to bat for us and spoke to four insurance companies who all said the same thing that we'd been reporting to the Real Estate agent. The Real Estate agent then claimed that she'd sold a place a week ago and they had no trouble getting insurance, but when pushed that turned out to be the Thursday before the earthquake.

They were going to lift the embargo where we're buying this Friday, but last night's 5.7 in Culverden put paid to that.

Still, sounds promising, dude, nobody else will be able to get insurance either, and not many people would be prepared to risk the alternative.

    Luck with it though, eh?

Exactly and thank you. Real Estate agent tried the "buy it without insurance!" on with 'er indoors today and 'er indoors just shrugged and said if someone else wants to buy it without insurance they are welcome to. The other offers we were competing with all had house sale clauses in them. We're expecting a 30 day delay.

Maybe the agent would be prepared to cover it for you personally.

    Worth an ask.

Given recent local history why would you want to live in that area? This not being able to get insurance looks like a good way to can the deal and try somewhere else less likely to fall into the ocean.
