Civilians are always caught in a war zone....

They are the only victims.

In any war.

Soldiers fight....that's their job.
They have weaponry/ transport/Intel etc and are thus best equiped to survive.
They probably even try to win.....

Historically there's never been any form of peace in Afghanistan and there never will be, warring tribal factions have been going at it for a millennia.
No matter what foreign powers try to impose in the area it'll always end-up back at square again.

The next drama will be if China implement their current idea of a super railway between them & Europe tracing through the remnants of the Silk Road trading corridors; that'll stir a whole hornets nest up in the area

The reality of a war zone, whether it be peace keeping or pushing enemy forces out of occupied territory, is not something a civilian can comprehend.

There are the odd one or two on KB who were not always civilians, there was a US Marine who had served in Lebanon IIRC. Another young bloke left KB to sail away with the grey funnel line. There are others.
