They serve the function of a Marcel spring - which is a cushion spring to soften engagement. I'd ditch them.
I leave them in the big, late model motors as they're hard on boxes - but a bucket is a different story.
I had to go to my copy of "Clutch and Flywheel Handbook" to get the name of the spring - bastard for making me think on a Sunday morning !!
Check the inner basket too for grooves, outer most common and the cush springs can be checked/replaced with nolathene etc.
Don't you look at my accountant.

thanks guys , turns out i put the front sprocket on the wrong way as it has a 2.5mm step , forgot it runs the oppersite way round to the fxrs . anyway i need to stop the front end shuddering under breaks now as the new rota must have a promblem .
