The US Republicans are beating up Critical Race Theory as some sort of threat. They say it's being taught in schools, Senator Ron Johnson R Wisconsin, has actually said it's being taught in kindergarten.

CRT is a university level subject, serious books have been written about it and no, I haven't read them. That's OK, it's very unlikely any of the Republicans have either. It's just one of the many options offered to students studying for a law degree.

Some of the southern states are banning any mention of slavery, lynchings, or any other unpleasantness in school history lessons. Those states are generally ranked bottom for educational attainment in the US so it probably won't make much difference anyway.

There are some aspects of the policies I can agree with, the complete over-reaction, however - I cannot.

And I'll give an example - Someone I know is an essential worker, they have children and no option for childcare, they have to send them to school in L3 conditions. Their child got sent home for a snot Nose. Now they can't work.

Why? Because under L3 the MoH has zero tolerance for any displays of any illness, regardless of whether it's related to COVID in any way. I'm not sure about you - but I certainly get sniffles in Winter - I'm sure you have too.

It's the overreaction that I have an issue with - the countrywide lockdown for a single case, now with time, there are more cases - but only in Auckland and Wellington - why is the rest of the country still in Lockdown?

When it comes to actual masks - I think it's the N95 grade - those are fine - they stop 99.99 something percent, other 'proper' masks are about 60% effective and a homemade cloth mask (remember this is advocated on the Government Website) - actually increases the risk (from memory, it's because it's porous enough to allow the droplets through, but the fibres hold onto the droplets, prolonging the exposure to the wearer).

I've got no issue with people in high-risk areas (Medical staff, Aged Care workers etc.) requiring proper PPE. I can also stretch to things like on public transport - especially flying, needing a Mask (Enclosed space, long periods of time, recirculated air).

The Wider mask mandates, I'm not a fan of. I have no issue with individual choice, but Mandates - not so much.

I've not looked into critical race theory as I'm fairly immune to fearful white repubs bleats. My admittedly extremely limited knowledge of it is it has been around for years, but the repubs have only just recently turned it into an issue.
I have however witnessed first hand the systemic racism leveled at black people every day for nearly 2 years while I was there. Trust me, the black people have an absolute rock solid case to be complaining about it.

So we need to separate 2 things:

Then you have to ask, if this is the case, why are Asian Americans outperforming everyone in the US? It's not CRT itself that is taught, it is the effect of CRT that are coming into schooling system.

Actually I'm open to myself having some racist leanings, I think just about everyone on the planet does, whether intentional or not.
