This cant be right ? Kawasaki NZ and Warranties

    Heya everyone.

I just bought a Kawasaki ZH2, with literally a thousand (1000 km's) on the clock. I am now the second owner. To do things properly, I have informed the original dealership to transfer the warranty over to my name. I was responded with a message from the dealer, that warranties on new motorcycles are not transferrable. At first I thought this guy at the dealership had access to some good weed and drugs, but I followed up with Kawasaki NZ. To my shock they stated, the warranty on a new motorcycle is ONLY linked to the original purchaser.

So, if you guys see people advertising stuff on Trademe with comments like "14 months factory warranty remaining", just know it may not be the case. Surely this cant be right ? From my past Suzuki's and other brands, the warranty was linked to the bike, not the owner... assuming of course you kept the bike serviced at the dealers, and not mess around with stuff that could affect the reliability. Anyone else had experiences like this in the past in dealing with Kawasaki ?

Just to be clear, there is nothing wrong with the bike, but surely a flagship model with VERY low mileage and full service history from Kawasaki, I would expect better. I bought this bike for having peace of mind, knowing its almost brand new.

I am in conversation with one of their technical managers, hoping they do right by their brand name in NZ.

There was some noise about this in the EU some years ago. In short as long as the vehicle had been serviced IAW the OEM's schedule then the warranty was transferable.

I assumed that would be the case here in NZ too. It appears I was wrong.

Let us know how things pan out as I'd be very interested. It sounds as though the person you spoke to is trying to dodge their responsibilities - IMHO at least

That does not seem right. Have you checked the printed warranty that should have come with the bike?

I looked at a used Aprilia last year which was 20 months old, and was assured by the dealer that the warranty was transferable.

Ditto for Triumph. I got a couple of minor things fixed under warranty as the second owner of the bike.

    Sadly its true,

From their mail : "Good morning, This is correct, Kawasaki NZ warranty applies to the original purchaser only."

However, he did also say, they will use their own discretion if they want to honor a warranty claim... which I suppose could be interpreted as a very vague statement... eg. if you need a headlight bulb replaced under warranty they will cover it, but if you blow a crankshaft its most likely going to be a big NO NO.
I made it very clear that I was intending to keep the vehicle serviced with Kawasaki to ensure I stick to the rules, but now I dont know anymore.

Feels like taking out dodgy insurance... you can pay your premiums every month on the dot, but the minute you may need to make a claim, its going to be a big uphill battle.

I find this terrible and disgusting from such a big brand like Kawasaki NZ.

Mitsubishi here in NZ do the same, their warranty is non-transferable. I guess the way they view it is their relationship is with the first buyer.

Didn't have a problem with the BMW and the multiple claims I made, although it was 10 odd years ago.
Good to know tho, although I generally keep my bikes for quite a bit longer than warranty period...

    Wouldn't the CGA apply?

With the bike being so new I don't believe they can just up and ignore their responsibilities.

Depends if he bought it privately or not. Privately, no cga (although sale of goods act still applies with regards to description etc), from a dealer then yes the CGA applies.

Yes this is true.Warranty is applicable to the original purchaser. Many retailers will accept subsequent owners many will not.

    Interesting to know.

Hell I bought a 12 year old Accord from a Honda dealer (Napier) 2 years ago. Turned out it had an issue with a 3rd party fucking up a cam belt change where the timing was one tooth out on the rear bank of cylinders.
Local Honda dealer (Palmerston North) talked to the Honda dealer I bought the car from and it was fixed locally free of charge. They even replaced an external aftermarket belt that wasn't too flash and replaced all spark plugs. I'd had the car 7 months when it was fixed.

They now service the car and do the WoF and they'll be at the top of my list when looking for another car.
