Thank you Mav for organising this ride - I had a blast. It's good to get out in the scary conditions, I was loving it around those corners.

And nice to meet some new riding buddies, just might have to get more of the girls along next time so we can talk handbags and shoes at lunchtime.

I was TEC for this group ... but it turns out it got almagamated with the quicker group. A bit of confusion reigned once we got to Maraetai. A group was waiting for the slower 250s but it turned out they went by a different route!

I was waiting with them for about 5-10 minutes until I realised they weren't coming our way! I rode on to ensure that the medium/quicker group weren't going to be held up by a missing TEC! As it was McJim came throbbing back on the Duchess when I was pootling my way around Maraetai bay to the marae there.

By that stage, there were bikes left, right, center and all in the hills of the hunuas (not laughing about the incidents, but at the general mayhem!)

I was hoping for three groups, clearly defined, but it turns out only certain people knew the route?

I think Mav and Mcjim did a great job with this ride, This is my first of hopefully many, But Mav you just can't control everything unless you jump on a newbie's bike and ride it for them but control is something that is utterly up to the individual and out of anyone elses hands.

Don't be too hard on yourselves guys you did a fantastic job!!!

The route we took is less travelled by cages. There are some other great roads. SH16, SH22, SH2 HOWEVER as soon as someone shows up for the ride that we have doubts about we have to avoid main roads as a lot of people simply will not do the 105kph that is required to be safe.

Once you have witnessed 30 or so 250cc bikes trying to overtake 10 cars and a truck you will understand why I want these rides to avoid main roads unless ALL the riders have the good sense to know when they can't safely make a maneouvre.

As we saw yesterday - it's too easy to bin a bike. At least when it's a Learner speeds people can generally walk away again. If they'd come off at 100kph we'd be looking at Hospitals and write offs.

In the past I have advertised 250 rides and said "This ride IS NOT learner friendly" and still got someone who won't accelerate up to 100kph.

It's often very frustrating trying to organise these rides. Motorcyclists are, almost by definition, very individualistic. It's like trying to herd cats sometimes.

I'll be leaving Auckland in the next 2 months anyway so I'll be well out of it.

For the benefit of those that weren't there we did try to split the groups in order that the faster riders would not be around the 250 learners. That way new riders weren't exposed to testosterone packed peer pressure.

Misfortune and misunderstanding caused the groups to overlap a little on the way out.

Actually it was fun, also quite liked the sight of some 30 odd bikes flocking the roads like they did !
If people won't ride to the 100km speed limit, then they are wanting to be overtaken on one wheel like I witnessed a few times... (front and back lol).

It was nearer 50 all up. There were 30 bikes in the 'fast' group alone.

Cripes... I knew there was a few, I counted to 40 and gave up. No wonder there was some muddling and confusion!

It would be a good idea for those who did drop their bikes to post up what happened, and how they reacted, for the benefit of other riders, new and experienced alike. Always helps. Again good riding. Pity about my busted left fork. Nice smooth lines gremlin and the dude on the gixxer, lame wheelie attempts though rofl.

Hahaha those wheelies were pathetic, HOWEVER my seals are still mint!
I am getting more into trying stand up wheelies now...only ever got two decent ones going yet...kinda sucks.
Nail your colours to the mast that all may look upon them and know who you are.
