good information. Buying a bike is more ideal option. Just a little concerned about gettiing something suitable with boxes or a very least some way of carrying water. I do have soft panniers that would be sufficient.
I lived a year in Melbourne and a year in Bright so know the south east victoria a little, and love it a lot, so will definately spend some time revisiting and exploring new places. But have been reading about the Oodnadatta track and it has captured my imagination. Would love to get out there.
Thanks for the offer of help as, if you are serious I may take you up on that offer. Would be nice to have someone scout out afew bikes before I get there as I arrive on 21Dec and want to be out of the city before xmas. Was thinking of approaching shops on Elizabeth street see if they do buy back deals?
    Any way keep in touch.

Head out to the burbs ..... Ringwood, you will know the area, all the town shops have big shops out there, Maroondah Highway.

Have not hooked into the private second hand bike scene here yet but am looking for a adventure bike myself.

Will help out if I can.

    Cheers
On Time .... In Spec .... On Budget .... Yeah Right!

Hi shiner, i am of on a tour on the 8th sept for a month. We are using "Bike Tours Australia" look up bike@biketours.com.au
We have got together a group of eleven and they have given us a very good deal. Some of us have used these guys before and are very pleased with the service they offer, and run a very good organised tour.

Some of us have hired BMW s some XT 600 some DR650s, to give you a costing of the XTs there standard hire rates are AUD $65 per day +GST and plus insurance, but because of the groups size those hiring XTs are getting them for AUD $35 per day insurance for a week is AUD $82.50 no exccess. Pretty good deal i would say.

Eight of us are traveling from Melborne to Perth doing our own thing for the first week, then picking up the tour group in Perth. The tour is the "Pioneer tour" 5000klm Over 3 weeks taking in the Oodnadatta track, gunbarrein highway, Ayers rock, Coober Pedy, Flinders ranges, then back to Melborne via Great Ocean Road.
The dealings ive had with the above tour organisers have been exellent, So just can't wait to get started.
    Cheers

$65 or less a day is getting more into my range. Finding 11 people may be a challenge though. Just spent a week in China (not on a bike), looks like it would an interesting country to ride around some day

Yes I have a dream.....one of many, to ride in central asia, maybe china or mongolia.
I am thinking for Australia ... I would prefer to ride alone or just with one or two others. Can get a little complicated otherwise.

I am thinking of an XT600 at this stage. Will be updating my blog site with more details tonight. check it out if you wish.

    Aussie Riding

Hi,Im in Aussie at the moment and your plan to ride around at that time of year would be alittle bit crazy. The heat even in May/June was ok the distance's are big as the country is BIG and i 've done all of the centre on my own.I'm in WA at the moment waiting for The Ausssie Safari to start on the 24th Aug.Plan your trip well, done take to much gear, have your bike prepped well and budget on $180.00 plus a day.All those tracks you have talked about were ok when i went though but at that time and seeing pics at MT Dare i would rethink your timing or directions.
