Insurance info?

Bike about to arrive in NZ, obviously I was always insured in the UK but wanted to know the general consensus here and who the best companies are. Also is it a rider policy ie covers you to ride any bike or a bike specific policy, just in case I can convince a friend to lend me a bike whilst mine is still in the container. Advice please.

Try Dave from Kiwibike at 0800 629 253. They are an insurance broker with very good rates. I guess you have to negotiate to see if they will cover you riding other bikes but mine is a bike specific policy. They also have breakdown assistance with the policy for a piece of mind. I am sure other KB's will recommend going to these guys.

Bike insurance can get quite expensive, but it is not a legal requirement, alot depends on what your bike is worth, I am insured with State, and it is less than $200 per year, but then my bike is not worth alot and I don't ride as much as I would like, generally bike policies cover the bike, not the rider to ride any other bike, I have the people that I will let ride my bike named on the policy, any un-named rider inncurs a higher excess. Discuss your requirements with the insurer and get several quotes.

+1 - I have used a couple of different brokers in the past for my bikes, and have now signed up with Kiwibike for my new one - excellent rates.

86 and I had thought about going up maybe on the thursday pm with registration booked in for the friday and if all goes well back on the saturday. Nothing confirmed.

Will speak to VIN people and check they are pretty sure to get it done in a day then plan from there.

Totally understand. I am going to ring guys at test centre, they do work on a saturday so may be willling to do it first thing but I am worried if there is any hassle we are then not going to be able to do anything until Monday!!!

86 will be making decision about when we go up anyway, as he will be driver.

Would be great to have some friends to come back with but bound to be a bit slower than you are used too especially recently I hear!!!

I'm with Star - but haven't claimed from them yet (and hopefully never will) so unsure what their like on that side of things. Have heard good things about them though, and they do insure for track days if your interested.

As above re kiwibike,at the time there was slight concerns re age of my bike,cheapest option was about $100 or so less than next plan,the underwriter said as long as under 20 yrs old should be ok,that was in feb and bike first rego in nov,so got cheaper option,also have aa membership for cars and asked about bike,somethings were ok but was advised to take aa plus (extra$35)or so which enables pick up home for bike and car,as well as accomodation etc if needed.

Have just got quote from kiwibike which seems reasonable but I am a pom and still naughty about comparing prices.
I am just waiting for the others to let me know. Not sure how much bike really worth and as it is 27 no youngster but low miles. Appreciate the info thanks.

I recently insured hubbys new purchase and I went with Kiwibike. Have two other bikes insured with them and they have always been extremely helpful and cost competitive, and it includes roadside assistance (similar to AA).

I also got other quotes from:

Great , thanks for all that info. As I have a week or so I shall definately look into them all and then make a decision.
I think I am leaning the KB way myself at present although I have had a comparable quote from another firm too.
