Mine squeaks like mad when it's cold for the first two or three kms.
At the same time the speedo either doesn't work or reads really slow.
After 2-3kms the speedo reads OK and the noise stops.

On a warm day the problem doesn't appear.

I'm guessing the speedo drive has some grease in it that needs to warm up
    - any other suggestions.

The grease in mine wasn't greasy It squeaked like buggary too. I took it completely apart, washed it in kerosene with a toothbrush, repacked it with grease and reassembled. Never had a problem again

edit: i've heard of some of those speedo units failing too, i presume because they also had no grease and seized?

had a look, pads are fine, disk was interesting, etched unlike mine or the others nearby, as in, i could feel wee even etches, in concentric rings.... thoughts? i thought if it'd previously not had the pads replaced in time before they'd be etched, but not so perfectly....

he's invited to come and fix my gn's and bring his to get greased up and so forth

Were you in Warkworth Today? I saw a guy on a Black GN, and when he drove away the noise from his front wheel would be enough to keep me off the road till I had it checked out! My GN had a squeak when I used the front brake, but otherwise was fine, if you have not got this looked at, and specially if it sounds like the one today, stop riding it and go get it checked out! Point the knowing person to the front disk, as I suspect that is where the problem lays.

Whip the pads out and give them a good clean up to get rid of accumulated dust.

OK well the wheel still squeaks , but Squiggles pretty much serviced my bike for me and gave me a run through of everything he did and it was so helpful. The main reason was because my bike's had trouble starting. At the end we took the wheel off, brake pads are fine, there are slight circular grooves all the way around the disc though, not sure what caused by. Someone had said that it could be the speedo thing on the wheel so we took that off and greased it up. Wheel still squeaks exactly the same, no idea what it could be. Squiggles has suggested when I have time to take the pads off and give them a light scruff with emery paper or something.

    Any other ideas still welcome!

you havent ridden down any roads with that shitty grit on the road in the past and got a tiny little bit in the pad have you?. This might explaine the etching on the disc and the squeel. Rubbing the pads with sand paper might get the grit out if thats the problem good luck
winding up stucky since ages ago
