R1 idle temperature

I just bought an '02 R1. Drove it from Kerikeri to Wellington on the weekend, I'm tired but it was fun.

During idle the temperature of the engine will creep up to 102 degrees + from a normal running temperature of 69-72 degrees in a matter of minutes.

Is this normal? Obviously while the bike isn't moving it will gather alot more heat but, I don't hear any fans turning on or anything like that. I guess the big question is... what sort of temperature will begin to damage the engine?

I know nothing about this bike except that it hauls and needs loads of respect.

I don't specifically know about the R1 either but suspect it's completely normal. My Blackbird absolutely cooks up near idle and it isn't long before the fan kicks in and tries to burn with me with VERY hot air. It's because your water pump hasn't got much throughput at idle with no compensating forced air cooling from the slipstream. I suspect it's all perfectly normal but if you hold the throttle open slightly more, you can increase the coolant flow and see if that makes a difference. Certainly nothing to sweat about.

My 06 sits on 73 most times on a trip ,gets up in the 80s round town and at lights etc will go over 100 the fan kicks in at 104 and will bring it down to just below 100 in a short time.

On the MVs the fan kicks in at 105 and I've seen 113 in 40C heat in Spain. Much more I may start to worry.

I don't think I saw more than 102 degrees, probably the fan would kick in at 104 just like Korumba said.

I'm bound to have more questions as I learn more about my bike. I'll do my best to research before I ask. Thanks again. =)

I picked up a bike in Auckland and drove it down to Wellington. It was a really nice and warm day in Auckland and I got stuck in traffic trying to get out of the city. Temp was going really hight, over 110C, I wasn't sure what was normal for this bike, it got me a bit worried. It didn't realese any water through the expansion hose though (that's when you should start to worry).
When I got home and took the bike apart to see what I've bought, I found the electric fan fuse blown and small gravel stuck in the fan preventing it from spinning smoothly.
I fixed it, now the temp is down to normal at idle.

Yup my 05 is the same

My 929 Fireblade's fan kicks in at 104-105 degrees. I also had a gravel stucked in the fan on an older fireblade that blew the fuse. If you have time just change the coolant 50/50 mix since it is a 5 year old bike, check the fuse and that the fan is spinning properly. If all is good then start the bike and rev it till it reaches 104 degrees and observe if the fan kicks in.

my 02 r1 can get hot up too 106 normal. fan kicks in . it never really go into 107 . i have seen the temp up too 111 on the r1 . fireblade 112 . very hot . if it ever go too 115 turn bike off .i ride bikes all day in 101 too 106 no problem

i had the gix up to 117 in 30*C heat and BAD traffic....no dramas bar the fan forced air burning the hell outta my leg...

Ive got an 03' R1 and normal operating temp on mine is 74 rising to max of 105 at stand still at lights etc which is when fan kicks in and brings down to around 100 pretty fast. drops back to 74 within matter of minutes of riding again. hope this helps

its 70 at open road speeds
80-110 stuck in traffic. very hot asse time. can't wear jeans at all if there's any traffic

had a shocker once coming in after a county blast and hit the ak. motorway-slowed to 80 ish then 50 on the town streets and the temp spiked to 120. pulled into a servo and let it cool. dunno what caused that actually...
