    Paekakariki Hill.

One thousand and one corners, and every one of them dark, wet, blind, and covered in rubble. As the great Mohandas Gandhi once said, "feck that for a game of billiards."

It probably didn't help that I don't quite trust the bike having just put it back together, nor that I haven't ridden for near half a year, but that scared the bejebus out of me.

I need more practice; roll on summer.

Yes, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, famous for his love of long, fast sweepers. And roundabouts, obviously; great for getting your dhoti down.

In a car, they'd have been a laugh. With my current "your Nana's Nana" level of riding skill and confidence... just scary. Every corner was entered on the wrong line, back wheel skittering about, up and down the box like a yo-yo, sliding around on wet or gravel.

Anyway, first ride of the year, so plenty of time to cease being a complete and utter handbag.

Yeah, that view's a stunner, coming from the Whitby end and popping out of all those blind corners to see nothing but sea and Kapiti. And sun was high, the wind low this afternoon. Reminded me a bit why the Road Code warns driver to watch out for gawping tourists.

Until a few weeks ago, Jay Lawrence lived just off that road. Get him to show you the way along it. (Might be best if you put him on an FXR150)

    Mint road.

The one and only time I went up it I was riding behind flyin. He disappeared off into the distance on his ZZR250 like he was, well... flying. Waiting for me at the top with his helmet off and a huge grin on his face.

    Requiescat in pace, dear lad.

I'll have to go back sometime and see if I can get my head around the hill. I'll be thinking of him...

I love the hill, it'sone of my favourite rides, From kapiti south over the hill, around the pahatahanui inlet and back over the hill to home. Cant think of a better way to kill an hour.

Seriously people ...... its a shit hole road to nowhere and back and if it wasnt for ther view at the top it would be boring and equally as dangerous in a bloody car.
I used to ride it for 7 years between Petone and Kapiti and back every day and then for another 8 years in a car from kapiti to petone. I know the hill very well and have seen the condition of it go from fun to delapidated and lethal.
Its now got a heap of cops covering it and locals report all the "racing" vehicles to the cops. 70 kmh speedlimit is what it deserves and it should never be classed as a great bike road.

Yeah it was getting a bit "used" in places when I rode it last year. Still a nice road though.
The cops from the local police college still use it though for their driver training programme.

Nice ride if you keep yer line, and the cages do too. If not there's nowhere to over-run, you can do a bunch of damage. I watched a guy on a Norton die under the front of a Zephyr up there, about 35 years ago. It's nowhere near as much fun now as it was then, or as safe. It's the one bit of road locally on which I excercise strict restraint.

oh i completely agree...my level of riding skill is still dubious at the best of times, so them hills would definitely be a challenge.

Gor for you doing it anyway!

I remembered it fondly from years ago but was dissapointed with the current condition when I went over this year. Even more discouraging was the number of of rubber necking dickheads using all of the road in their 4WD tanks.
