OK, sorry to add to the growing list of "non-bike" threads... but anyhoo...


Heres the delio...

Broadband modem connected to a wireless router with a printer attached to the router via ethernet port.

Broad band beamed to a laptop and a desktop.


Now, my question... Is it posible to give either computer 'priority' over the broadband bandwith, say at certain times? For example, between 6pm and 8pm the laptop is 'allowed' 50mps then other times receives full speed?

That is a BIG Question, prolly best if you go to wikipedia and do a search on QOS = Quality of Service. It is an IP feature for doing sort of what you want.

Would very much depend on your router.

The "certain times" bit will probably be a no go, but you never know.

Bandwidth throttling it's called. And yes, it is very doable. PROVIDED your router has the feature!

Expensive routers used in commercial installations do. Cheap routers used in home installations, unlikely, thoguh who knows.

Check your router documentation. In essence you configure how much bandwidth you want each port to have. Not sure if I ever seen one where it's dynamically configured based on time of day though. Still probably is one out there.

EDIT:. Yep. some Cisco (surprise!) routers can do it, time of day and all. Expect pricing in the thousands though . There may be cheaper alternatives
