Getting back on...

Hi all,

As some of you may know I had an off in August that resulted in my GN250 being written off and my arm in plaster - I'm mostly OK (just waiting to find out more about that pesky wrist ligament) and am starting to think about getting back out there.

My quandary - I was 2 weeks off sitting my full - so now I have no 250, no helmet and no jacket... any suggestions? I don't want to race out and buy a helmet and jacket - what if I don't like riding when I get back on? OR decide that I've had enough... but, obviously, I need a helmet and jacket to get back on...

Not such a problem on the bike front - someone has already offered to let me pootle around their neighbourhood on their hubby's GN, and WMCC will give me a loaner for my full test...

So - suggestions? Dunno when the big get back in the saddle will be - need to get my wrist sorted (have an appt with the specialist on the 20th) but it will be sometime this summer...

Good to hear you are getting close to your comeback.

I guess the trick is just get on and do it and it should all come back to you.

Can you buy a helmet but borrow a jacket just in case?

The fact that you have even asked this question tells me you are wanting to get back on a bike.

I'm sure that there are plenty of riders whio will lend you the gear for a week or two while you get confident once again. Then, one day while in a bike shop, you'll see a helmet that takes your eye, then a jacket, then.....

What I read into your question is, are you normal in being nervous/scared to get back on the bike.
You need to go out for a quiet ride somewhere, it doesn't have to be long, just somewhere to gain your confidence back. You obviously haven't been riding long before the accident.
When I was learning to ride (off road), my husband and mate drove me nuts worrying about me falling off (I did it a lot). I had a decent accident one day, where I wheelstood into a tree, broke my helmet peak, sprained my wrist and I can't remember what else. I couldn't ride any more that day (shock and too sore), but as soon as I could, I was back out there looking for more trees to hit.
The guys who helped me after my f'up were also worried about me not riding again. That was never even a thought that crossed my mind.
You've obviously got the bug, but just need to get back into it in your time - don't leave it too late or the bug will bugger off (it'll come back in time).
You'll be fine, go have some retail therapy (who knows, a bike may catch your eye giving you motivation to get your full). Good luck and enjoy the summer riding

You're probably right - I wouldn't even be asking this question if I still had my bike! And I do get a jealous pang whenever I see someone cruising past the bus...

Its totally normal to ask yourself that question dude, like Frosty I had a major (mine was 13th June this year). Stupid (young) tart pulled out in front of me. Put me in hospital with the worst of my injuries being a busted hip. I have 9 pins & a steal plated glued to my sorry ass for life now. 6 weeks after my accident (while still on crutches) I went out & bought the biggest bike I have ever riden

Was shit scared, but hey, feel the fear & do it anyway. Personally I find it even more fun to be scared while riding, adds to the excitement

Awesome! I have a strangely small head, but I'm about a 12-14 for a jacket. That would be great, Mrs KD - I'll even buy you a beer (not when you're riding, of course)

I'll wait until after my specialist appt on the 20th, so I know what the go is with wristy, but I've been digging in the garden all day no probs, so here's hoping it's good news!

Cool, I have a teeny tiny head too, so should have a helmet that'll fit you and a jacket too. Give us a yell when you want to come and try them on for size.

When the Grub first decided that his new CBR needed a lie down on the Rimutakas the doctor sent him to the Hand Physio to get him ready to ride again ... she was wonderful (even if she said no to riding an extra couple of weeks to get his hand ready enough) ... if you have not seen one PM him for details .. ACC paid!
