cheers, to old for the racing. more like trackdays for me, no worry if i bin on that, but the Buell, that would bring me to tears. Also be great to whip down to the local Dairy to grab some milk or bread, hehe
Why would you ride that long and that gnarly stuff if you don't have to, Its what we do, we love it.

With just a few small wheelies and stoppies on the way.

I used to have a KX80 Motard that I took to the bucket meets. That was great fun. I'm pretty keen to get a KX500 of the same era (around 1995) cause I'd be just like having the old bike only bigger.

Then I got into road bikes since they were cheaper and at the time there was any road going motards I could afford (since I wanted to get my licence). Sportsbikes are great but I'd like to get back into motards, and definately want to race (can't have both a road bike and race bike in one with a sportsbike I've found...)

good know how this is done on a drz , see pict
I was expecting the 450's to be a bit more thrilling. A WR would be cool, though I wouldn't turn down a Husky or Gas Gas if I could afford it

So you'll ffind that CC for CC the water cooled engines will generally perform better.

An air cooled dirtbike engine is also designed to work hard at low speed with vitually no air moving around the engine ( stuck in a bog up at the back of the Orange hut) so around town will be no problem.
XR all the way bro! Don't get me wrongI like Suzuki's but DR650s are sluggish and heavy and consequently last forever.

Right on. The SM is detuned a bit for the road (compared to the dirt bike)thing but have plenty of potential.

Get in touch with Limbimtimwin he has an SM, if you speak to him nice he might let you have a go.

Probably a good place to start if you can make it work financially, though I must warn you you need to think about having money for the conmsumables because one you get the buzz you're fucked and will probably end up with a seat shaped recess in your ass from all the riding you've been doing and we all know what happens then.
I knew watercooled bikes were faster, just didn't know if it was by much when it came to singles.

That's good, maybe an old XR400 may not be such a bad idea just as a hack. Still want something nicer if I can manage.

Why is the SM be detuned? Can you 'retune' it?

Last bike of a mates I rode the bottom end blew on me (didn't expect that from a VTZ250) and it's a bit awkward between us now. Not too keen on test riding bikes except from dealers.

I'm still dreaming here since I can't afford anything right now. Luckily at the moment my parents are paying for insurance. I can only barely afford paying it off and paying for all it's other costs. But I despise my VFR and want to get something else for the road, something newish and reliable and probably from a dealer

Like Sully said, the watercooling allows engines to perform better.
The DRZ400 has the same amount of power as the DR650, but more maintenence as the 400 is working harder. Personally I would rather deal with the extra maintnence of the 400 than the extra weight of the 650.

The DRZ400SM is detuned to allow for the higher road usage and wear and tear you get from rgular riding to space out the sevices. Should be pretty easy to retune, maybe with bits from the DRZ400 off road bike. Or a 510cc big bore kit from Maxpower Engines for over 46HP at the back wheel.

I'd prefur light and nimble but more maintenence too, so a MX based bike would be fine

I saw the price for that kit and was thinking 'haha, no way, not at that price' but then I saw the dyno graph. Feck, it's near on double the power! Kinda puts me off a stock DRZ in the first place though, my RG had that kinda power at the wheel

Haha, I've always wondered if they'd make tarmac jumps. Yes, they would. Love to give that a shot.

The berms are pretty wicked too

Hell yea, they're getting some serious air over that jump, bit hairy when those 2 riders touched, be a hard landing if you came off!

That's what I thought too, but man, I really need to learn more mechanical skills and get the right tools cause my KTM is costing me a small forturne in trying to convert it from a dirt bike & ride it as a Supermoto...!

In comparison to my 1000cc Suzuki which needs an oil change every 3-4000 km, it's pretty intense. But the KTM is soooooooooooooo much more fun, and even though it has an electric start I still like to kick it over, there's something manly about kick starting a bike (Tim-the-toolman Ooohhhuuuuuuu).
