Yep I agree that a smallish number of experianced riders would be the way to go but the thread was a group KB ride with no numbers restrictions and on basis I think it is too far. Get some newbie trying to keep up and you have a recipee for disaster. I'm interested in the Westport and thru Grey and back thru Arthers pass. That's about 800k's. So I'm in for that. The other way if you have more for the complete ride is to divide into two groups fast and a slow group. Mind you I'd be in my own one for that distance. The real slow but hey I'm an old man..........I know my limits. Just my thoughts on this.Well well well the icons are back. Thank you Huey.

Well I think that is what we are after.
And threw in open to see who else are keen.
I though about that as well.
But at the time we are starting would probably rule out all but the keen.
And I do not think we will be pissing about, because of the time it will take to do the whole ride.
When we see who is coming and work out petrol stop's for the shortest range bike, it will become clearer on where and when we will be stopping and for how long.
It may pay to going the other way and meet us at one of our stops. (Kumara? or Greymouth?)
Then we will not be waiting and you can ride at your own place.
And if the worst comes to the worst, we can wave as we pass on the road.
These are just my ideas and it will have to be talked about.
Feel the fear and do it anyway
Don't confuse education with intelligence.
There are alot of highly educated idiots out there.
The other alternitive that sounds better for those that don't want to do the full trip is to cut through Arthers, miss Greymouth and swing south through Haast and the Fox and meet up at Wanaka. Those that have done the full tripp will be wanting to pace themselves on the final leg. Early days but that appeals to me. There is some nice country down that way. Pity to miss it all with speed. It's still a serious e ride.

Should be a great ride,i cant wait. After my ride to Tauranga and back i covered 1900km in two days with two ferry crossings,a couple of hours wait at ferry terminals and heavy rain on the whole trip.17 hours to get there and 16 hours to get back. And that was just cruising. Then i think this round the coast ride is going to be a great fun ride. With a good bunch of guys to ride with and everyones bike all set and ready for the trip then we should be all set.
So what's the definitive distances involved??

Indeed, and if you pull the handles on the route on the google map to cut across Arthurs Pass thus missing the top bit then it becomes 1095km which was what I was thinking of for a big one next year.
I know you're all set to go via Lewis etc, I'm just saying that I agree with the accuracy of the distances stated for your route as 1345km.
Of course if I were to do it you'd loose me as soon as you maintained a ticketing speed for any length of time especially on the straights.
I'd have to skip or cut short the stops to catch up, but my cornering speed is just fine thank you very much![]()

What sort of speeds are we likely to be doing?
Legal +10, +20?

I haven't checked to see if the distance given by Google Maps is accurate or not yet, TA seems think it is accurate though...
Publicly I'm going to have to say legal. I will not be riding at anywhere near licence losing speeds.
I would also add that speed plays a big factor in how tiring a ride can be, that faster you go the more concentration, energy, stamina, etc needed.
Unfortunately I have the Nationals on at that time or I would have been quite keen
It's been a while since I've done a big one day ride
