16 tooth front sprocket for GN250

hey guys just wondering been told that if I change the front sprocket on my ginny to a 16 tooth it will make a big difference on how it performs. I was also told it goes better on the motorway with this change and doesnt REV ITS BALLS OFF at 80ks. If I buy one are they easy to fit and is there anyone in tauranga who could help me fit it thanks.

Yes it will make a big difference. It will feel gutless most of the time & will not pull through top speed.

It may feel a little calmer in easy conditions on the motorway. It's all a compromise but stock on small bikes is very often the best. I had an old GS550 where the previous owner had done the same. Felt like it's balls had been cut off, I only worked it out some while later.

It's defintely worth trying. Cheap to buy the sprocket, easy to fit, a good experiment.

Try a 39 instead of the 41 on the back. Just enough to make a difference at 100km but not too high for the little 250 single to push.

my GN pulls hard with the 16 tooth front... hell, i've power stood it in second. But then again that bike has had other things done to it :S

I would drop two teeth on the rear sprocket if i was you

Dont suppose you recall the part # or what the original fitment was for said 39 tooth jobby...?

I've got a 250 thumper too, and went from a 14/44 (3.14 final drive ratio) to a 15/42 (2.80 final drive ratio). Acceleration is definitely blunted, but not so bad. Just got to give it some grief in 4th gear before hitting 5th. Didn't mean to make quite such an excessive change in gearing, I cocked up But once it's up to speed, it's way more relaxed to ride in 100kph zones, and the peculiar arrangement of ratios makes open-road cornerning easier too. In some ways, with such a drastic change, it's almost like shifting everything a gear down; now I've got a tall first gear, and a top gear almost where I used to want a 6th gear (on small bikes, I often find myself wanting to click up one more gear and finding nothing).

When I next change the chain, I'll put the old 44 rear sprocket on, that might be a better arrangement.

Road and Sport Hamilton did the sprocket change. part # apr81939c 39 tooth gn 250 sprocket. Thats all there was on the job sheet. $53 + gst

i can fit it for you if you want to go that way, but like others have said if you are going bigger on the front sprocket you will lose your acceleration in favour of top end speed, but hey at the end of the day if you arent happy with it you can always change it back, its only a $20 ish part.

fitted it today and man what a differance heaps better on the motorway. Little bit different in traffic now though staled a couple of times in second oh well will just have to get used to it.
