    Lunch with Rhys

It was my pleasure to sit next to Rhys Jones at lunch yesterday. I was fascinated to hear him talk about some of his pals.

Conversation drifted around him 'getting on a bike at the Classics festival.' and that last time he did he was having ' some trouble with the hairpin at Pukekohe.'

'So I asked a few of the lads.'

'My eyes glazed over 3 sentences into Hugh Anderson's marvelously technical assessment, so I went and asked Croz'.

He said 'How do I know? - I just ride it.'

So none the wiser he 'asked Aaron (Slight), and he said pretty much the same thing with a grin and a shrug - 'Dunno, just go round it.'

I fond it an interesting contrast.

Hugh he told me that he used to do/imagine every gear shift and every minuscule aspect of every race, twice, before he got on the bike.

Other high achievers just 'wrung its neck'.

"The man in the arena" comes to mind.

You would get the same response from the best fighter pilots. "Just do it!".

Back in the early '70's he was some sort of TV personality....sort of like Macus Lush or Jason Gunn, cringe factor of 12 on a scale of 10.We used to see him at bike races and Motocross meetings - he used to wear a mustard coloured leather jacket....so I put him in the folder marked poofter from then on.I never saw him actually ride a bike - but I bet he never saw me ride a bike either,so we are even.

Actually,I remember he was at the meeting where the bike in my avatar raced one of it's last races,I bought it a couple of years later.
