While I was watching it, I said to myself "this is a remake of The Omega Man" bit of online research later and it seems they are both based on the same book written in 1954 Richard Matheson called "I am Legend"... and now I'm sitting up in bed with the lights on, all the doors and windows bolted, and my M14 propped against the bedside table.

The ending in the book was much better.
Bloody Hollywood and its insistence on happy endings. Far too many good films have been fucked up due to studio executives insisting that they have to finish on a positive note.
