Suggestions on bike?

Hey guys, I'm tentatively looking at getting another 250 and have been pulled towards getting an enduro/cross/whatevername bike so I could join a couple friends out on some dirt tracks every now and again, so my question would be which bike should I get that best suits my needs?

I would want to use the bike for some trail riding, moto-x, blats on the beaches, etc. but I also would like to have it road registered so that I can have a bit of fun on the back roads if i so feel like it.

The bikes that have caught my eye are the Honda CR250R and the KTM 250exc
and slapping a road kit (if it's even possible) on them.

Any information you can give me about those bikes or any other bikes would be great, also the feasability of having two sets of tyres/rims for road and off-road riding.

At present I too am looking at getting a 'do it all' steed, if you want to do any (semi) serious mx it's gotta be the ktm (exc + excf) As you can pop some lights on these - one bike on the horizon that does look interesting is the new yami wr250r - road legal- efi -ali frame - wr250x version in motard trim - the list goes on. can't see any info on the yam nz website but lots of other info online (thumptalk etc.) - anyone out there know anything about these ?? price, availability etc.

My experience using a CR250 as a trailbike is that it has a number of faults. The suspension is too harsh, first gear is too high and top is too low, the gas range is poor, there is no bash plate, the engines power is too explosive for slippery hills and the like, supposedly the 19" rear is easier to flat (I never had problems). Many of these issues can be solved but I would say the KTM EXC would have to be a better choice - you can even ride it on the road. A CR250 is still a hell of a lot of fun as a trail bike! YMMV.

riding a cr250 myself, id say its not the ideal trail bike, but its certainly still good. i also havnt had a problem with the 19' rear, and yea the suspension is a bit harsh, and it does tend to run out of speed. however, on a semi open section in a race/enduro type environment its sheer power makes for some good ass whipping material

ktm's EXC200 often comes with a road kit. My mate bought one a while ago and damn those things are quick. Really good bike for trail riding etc....

The ktm comes with the road kit from new, I think you may struggle getting the CR250 road registered.

CR250 road legal - very slim chances.

I've not had many troubles with my CR on trails though. I got Danger (Greg) to work on my suspension and its fucking brillaint.

DEfo say steer clear of the CR if you're wanting a trail bike. Good fun however they can be extremely tricky to handle times (haha good fun indeed). I just bought the CR as MX is more my scene and i'm not so keen on the trail side of things but will do the odd one on it.

Personally I think any of the MX 4strokes would be mint. I've got an 06CRF250R while it has no light you can go 250X which has lights and electric start. They've got good torque for those hard to reach places and quite frankly are just rideable bikes.

I'm a honda man thru and thru but I think the only other bike i'd consider buying would be a KATO however i've heard mixed reviews about how well they handle.

With a 2 stroke on the road it would be a pig to ride and you'd be forever stopping to fuel up. Then you have to carry a litre of 2 stroke oil around with ya.

If you are going to spend quite a bit of time on the road I would have to agree with this, the two stroke really doesn't like that constant throttle type riding that is used on the road to cruise at a constant speed.

I, sexy it is and you have no argument here. Well spec'd and with all the good shit on board. ride them both and draw your own conclusions. If you think that you will do more road riding (60/40) have a ride on a Kawasaki KLX 450.
