There's a dead body behind me, as I am typing this

It's my dead grandmother, and they have put the casket in the study, where the computer is.
It's quite weird knowing there's a dead person behind me.
She looks good though, better than she did as she was dying. It looks like she's just asleep.
I feel as if she will rise up and potter off to the kitchen to bake something.
    Very strange!
Determined to kill my bike before it kills me

Don't you love it when they choose to have the body in a room where you do stuff .... I think its great you have her at home ... before the final send off ...

Some things are worth dying for, living is one of them.

I know what you mean...it is an incredible look of peace, isn't it?
Very surreal experience beign near someone you've known so well, that is there beside you but not quite.

I found those last minutes invaluable and I still cherish them.

EXCUSE ME. HAVE I GOT THE RIGHT PLACE?
Do you realise how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them?

Never heard of displaying a body in the house - whose custom is this?

    Irish. English. Maori. Probably others.

'Twas pretty much universal when I was a child. I was surprised when I discovered that some people didn't do it. Still seems disrespectful not to . People need to say goodbye.

Condolences on your loss Mr Steam.

    Condolances Steam..

Both my Nana & Grandad's coffins were laid out at my Aunties house for a day or two.. & I remember it being a very special time, just to be able to sit & be with them in their peace. Many of us put a special item in the casket to go with them. My oldest son was only about 5 when Grandad died & it was also a very valuable learning experience for him, to be able to see what death is all about. He even gave Great Grandad a kiss goodbye!

    Thanks for the condolences, folks.
It's good that she's gone, she was suffering big-time.
So everyone is laughing and drinking here, all the family has come, from Australia even. Hot aussie female cousins!
Is it bad to hit on a relative at a funeral of another relative?

Jeff Foxworthy www.jefffoxworthy.com describes it as one of the things that makes you a redneck.

    he also says
You Might Be A Redneck if...You need pliers to change the channels on your TV.

    I did once, when I was 14.

    Second cousin.

    Gosh, she was cute, too.

    Yes. Condolences too.

    Not an Aussie thing.
Probably to do with the heat.

Tapping on the coffin lid does me.
