am I looking at it wrong? Doesnt that whole unit move and the bush is there to stop it "welding" together? Is there not a shaft through the middle of that large gear?

no, sounds like you are looking at it right....that whole thing drives the generator via that small cog but i think it may be failing to drive it cos the bush is worn out

im probably not explaining it very well

i believe the bush itself is simply to absorb the shock of startup

... on The Great North Island Loop Ride which will take place on Saturday (and maybe Sunday) 15th March.

The ride is passing through the other end of the gorge and we'd love to meet up and ride with the Manawatu crew since you gave us such a great time on Waitangi Day.

hmmmm. I would have though it would still turn on the bearing further into the photo. I am picking the diodes worn out and buggered. Hope I am wrong but either way it shouldnt be that expensive to repair.

yep. which means a recon or a second hand one. Let you decide pros and cons and costs of either.

Just adding... you will probably find it has been on its way out for ages. Not terribly schooled on rf900 alternator but there should be a couple or 3 diodes and 1 or 2 failing could still give you enough power to charge the battery if ridden long enough without drawing too much power. Basically its job is to produce too much power to run the bike and the remainder charges the battery so being as it doesnt take a shitload of power to run the bike it wouldnt take too much to have some in reserve for battery charging. Have you found on short trips before it can be a little hard to start?

Like I say, more than happy to be proved wrong if it saves you some $$ and gets you back on the road.

The rest of the alternator ok though? I'd say shitty timing but it's always shitty timing when ya transport be it bike or car gives trouble.

Yeah someone will let you know mate, not much use me chiming in about it though, bit to far away and that stinking range gets in the way of seeing what's happening over there...
