I almost had a couple of crashes early on doing the same thing. I'm not sure if it's the best thing to do, but now what I do is cover the front brake and clutch, do a quick head check but try and keep the front car in my peripheral vision. I tend to move to the left part of the lane at that point as well, not only so I can make a quick lane change, but so that if I look back and the cars have all stopped I can stuff it down the gap.

Ouch! Glad you are going to be okay. It's good to hear that there were so many decent folk on scene to help you out. Heal well.

Thanks to everyone for their best wishes, looks like the bike can be sorted relatively cheaply- largely due to Ixions generosity.

It sucks to be caught out by people slamming on their brakes before a speed camera, I really should have expected it, and even if it wasnt expected, I should have left a large enough gap so that I could stop in time.

I just hope that people learn from my mistake, I know that I will be increasing my following distance, and making sure that my headchecks are as quick as possible.

A dreamcatcher works,if your dream is to be gay.

I think the worst time to have a heart attack is during a game of charades.or a game of fake heart attack.

If Barbie is so popular, why do you have to buy her

When I crashed in East Tamaki I had cars just driving around me while I lay there on the road, it really sucks and you lose a lot of faith in people. At least now I know I'll be fine so long as I only bin in wealthy suburbs.
