Try this Brett,
From Piopio, Waitewhena Rd to Ohura,
Left onto Huia Rd-Roto Rd,
Short squirt on the Forgotten Hwy, then left onto Kurarau Rd and into Tauramanui.
Cross the river, and take Hikumutu Rd to Owhango pub for a beer.
Take the hwy back to Tauramanui, and choose a route home.
Would like to join in, but I'm off to the Blues fest at Whitianga.
80% good Gravel, and F all cages if any.
Enjoy your Easter.
PS NZ Land Info maps are the best for planning rides. You'll end up with a stack of them, but it's worth it.
Get them from the map shop in Victoria St.
lol. Thats the Whanganui. Ya won't ford that mate. Use the bridge behind the town centre. The petrol station will give you directions. Just say you want to get onto Hikamutu Rd.
If you want to check out roads around Owhango/Ruapehu, try Kawatahi, and Kaitere Rd's. They both Start/End between Owhango and National Park township.
"Kiwi Maps"--Waikato is a good overview map, available from servo's.
Good point!
Cant wait, that sounds perfect for me, I appreicate it heaps, cant wait to get the maps out now !

Will do. So what Nordie has got will do?
I'm not very tech savy, so something simple to use, and simple software for a laptop.
Edit: Ignore my GPS comment. Just found the thread on the subject.
If you're heading from Hamilton you could always add the Raglan-Kawhia road, then turn off Harbour Rd onto Hauturu, Te Anga, Waipuna, Mairoa, Kea. Adds around 60 km of gravel.
Waitewhena is always worth doing - an excellent 35 km of gravel.
Plus if you Turn off Kururau at Otunui North, onto Ararimu, Opotiki then you can cross SH4 at Okahukura to head north to Ongarue. All up another 40km or so of gravel - some very winding, some fast and flowing.
And from Hikumutu you can take Kawautahi, Oio and Upper Retaruke which brings you out in Raurimu. Maybe another 25 km of gravel.
I'm keen to join you.
Go for the fording option Quasi, Tri-boy just gets scared of water cause the trumpy falls over........
Pics required!
(specially if cowpoos attends)
Too long for me - that will totally destroy my rear tyre, and I plan to finish it off next weekend on the ride to Kawhia.I'll tootle around some North and West Waikato roads.....some of the lesser known stuff.
