Good to hear you had a nice ride!

Doesn't have to be quick, but if you manage to do it without crossing the centre too much (tho not many centre lines along it), then you can consider yourself a fairly capable rider, as it is NOT an easy piece of road.
ah well... i still like it
I agree - the summit road is a very nice piece of road. However, there are quite a few things you need to bear in mind up there. It has a lot of cyclists on it - which means that the car coming around that next corner is not unlikely to be partially or completely in your lane. Sometimes gravel and shingle gets thrown onto the road surface, so pushing to apex a left-hand corner could result in a nasty surprise. There's sheep up there - so keep your eyes open for them. Livestock trucks travel the road every now and again - combined with the sheep means that there can be shit on the road as well. A couple of places along the way there's eroding rock walls, at these places it's not uncommon to see larger rocks lying on the road.

Now that winter is approaching you have to very f-ing careful. When the frosts start setting in you'll find grit everywhere up there - especially in the sharper corners. Beware!

I ride it often - sometimes I commute along it and head down Dyers Pass road. I can see why people on more powerful bikes could find it scary - my 250 hasn't managed to give me any nasty surprises up there, but I suspect a more powerful bike could loose grip on some of the dodginess pretty easily unless ridden with a steady hand.

Dunno if I think it is suitable for group rides though...

WTF - are you calling my new bike porky? It's 203 kgs dry... Probably around 230 kgs wet.

Haven't been out for a while myself, had a trip sprung on me, so spent a few hurried weeks saving then travelling.

Would like to help out with a spanner evening, I enjoy tinkering as much as riding, so winter doesn't hurt so bad

awesome ride everyone.. pretty good riding AND behaviour even!
Like the pics Transalper, you really can see how gorgeous it was up there watching the sunset on the pink clouds, but yep a bit nippy... winter is certainly getting here...baaaaaahumbug...
And for whoever i was following down Gebbies I hope my lights didn't bother you, had to have them on full cos I couldn't see a thing! Then I had to borrow Devients headlights by following him closely back to Halswell... sweet!

Yep, my low beam is shite!

Phoenix as the personal set of traffic lights... hehehe, luv it!

    *More giggling at phoenix's expense*

I had wondered if it was you following me back to Halswell. In my mirror I could see one white lamp, but didn't look like it was lighting up much, and next to it, which would be the righthand side bulb, an orange glow... not unlike one of those little hallway pilot lamps to show you the way to the bog in the middle of the night! Anyway, they didn't look very effective to me, so I can't blame you for using my headlight, which is extremely effective - quite happy with it actually! As an aside, what'd you think of my lines/pace/smoothness through there? Pick anything up?

Ehehe personal set of traffic lights... that's gold!

I wanted to give the back a rest, but some Guzzi rider did not want to do a permanent swap so I would have a bike with rear suspension that worked, then I could have been the one doing wheelies.

Had to add D you did well to hold off for that long.
Its not the destination that is important its the journey.

This is the only thing worth it out of this whole post!!!

Seriously though, yup could have applied more front, did come off just before I slide past tris and reapplied.. Also got to remember that it takes a bit for the front to lock, so use it more (did you say that your front locked though?)

frigg...... don't you ever ride a buell...

you just need to think of using the front brake and you'll have either a stoppie or lock up ( read, head over handle bars..)

    I'll assume thats me!

Ha! Impressed that you seem to have hit on everyone there!!! I get busted by you for centreline hugging (was it on Summit Road??) Then from Alex for left line hugging coming into Halswell.....

Yeah, my lines could definitely use some work, have been trying to focus on keeping roughly in the drivers wheel track of the cars... that sound about right to everyone??
Missus: What the f*&k is that???!!!! Where the f*&k do you think that's going??
Me: It's a [insert old broken vehicle here] can't you tell?
Missus: Oh for f*&k's sake... [slams door]
Me: Phew, lucky she didn't see what's on the trailer!
