A girlfriend once asked " Why is it you seem to prefer to race, than spend time with me ?"
The answer was simple ! "I'll prolly get bored with racing too, once i've nailed it !"
Bowls can wait !
Lol yeah Egmont ! Thats where she was yep, still regret her selling the lodge, was the mint as spot to get away from all the hustle down here ! Nothin but birds (rain) and the odd tourist !
Actually got reasonably fit while up there, doing all the walking tracks (Not much else to do lol)!

Some choice tracks alright, have walked Lake Dive in winter, around the Opunake side to Oanui and new hut Waiaua, have done return plateau to Dawson Falls walk. The scenery and wilderness on the tracks is great, and only about 10mins from Stratford, then maybe 1hr walk into silence.Like the smell you get in the bush after rain,as long as I'm not wet lol.
Dad and his partner have 35 acres about 5km from Stratford boundary on Pembroke Rd,great views of the mountain, even snow if (un)lucky in winter.
Also have an auntie and(late)uncle who farm under the mountain in Opunake, they have nearly 800acres which goes to the boundary fence.Only 15 mins from town, they have great views of mountain and coastal areas too.

Yeah that spot your Aunt farms would be great ! Had a look at the area around the pouakai's ! If it wasn't for Heidi wanting to come back down here to the Kapiti Coast, that would have been the area i would have headed to ! Find somewhere to cover me from the NWers and have the coast and mount right on the doorstep, not to mention some of the best roads in NZ !

Top of Wiremu Rd -Kaweaora Rd area is great on a fine day.General area she farms.
Ask Al and Sarah how good the road is,we took Wiremu-Stratford/Opunake Rd to the falls first then went down to Manaia Rd to Kaponga, then along Eltham Rd to Opunake.First time I've been on those roads as well(late learner),a few rough bits but overall ok,still need to be weary of cows, trucks etc.

Well with a name like william i'd fit in nicely there lol ! Rode that one a couple of times when we did the odd round the mountain run ! Heidi's daughter lives out Rahotu so we used to trip out there a bit !
She also got her Scorp while still up on the mount so them roads are a great training ground !
So are you Stratford way or Hawera ! Can see you knowing the forgotten highway quite well !

Hawera live, but work in Stratford. Will change soon.
Lived here most of my life, hadn't been to Whangamomona till I bought the bike, how bad is that, never even by car, closest had been was 10km from the pub lol.
Been to the pub 3 or 4 times now, taken 40+ years to do it,used to hunt and tramp in the surrounding area as a younga guy.
The road trip from NP to Hawera via coast is good, but also the route along Carrington Rd onto Wiremu Rd to Ihaia Rd to Opunake is a good one.
Only thing really about Taranaki is you generally go out and come back the same way, except doing the round the mountain.Ok you can go from Hawera along the Surf Highway upto Kaponga then along to Eltham/Stratford and home.

Unless ya head through over mt messanger through the awakino gorge and make a day of it coming home awww there would be a number of choices wouldn't there ? hehe some roads up there i've never been on let alone on a bike !
Used to detour through NP (well by pass it) just to avoid SH1 as it was getting to be a weekly ritual to be headed to auckland there at one stage !
It probably only adds an hour if that once ya know the road from here to auck or vice versa on a night run !
