Arghh what to do?...............Have been waiting for some tyres to turn up this week but haven't seen them yet,its getting to the point now to make a decision on what to run with.
I really wanted the SC1 cause I know it'll last the day and the grip is outstanding, what I've got here though is my used SC2's,still good but I know they spin up a little in some corners.
My other option is a new SC0 which I'd like to try but am not sure if a)it will last the day and b)how that much grip will affect the bikes handling.
On a cold track, the SC2's should be the better chioce. It works like this...
On a hot track, the harder tyre surface heats up a lot quicker than the carcas, making it "shear" the top layer off. so the hotter the track, the softer the compound. At least that is what I've been told. On a cold track, the harder tyre heats up a bit slower so the whole thing gets a chance to warm up at the same rate.
Turn your warmers up to a higher temp (if you have adjustable ones) and the SC2's are the right tyre for the day.
That's the problem, you were gonna have less grip. And once a tyre starts to "shear", it's damn near impossible to stop it. Bloody awfull feeling when they start letting go without warning.
Anyone who's spent time on Taupo with treaded tyres knows what happens, so anyone reading, please bare in mind that a softer tyre, will not give you more grip, just cost you money.
I've run all combinations of pirelli superbike slicks at taupo...found SC0 front and sc1-2 rear to be the best [sc1 would be my pick on the rear in winter]...all the compounds will happily cold shear...but I found less rebound [as in faster rebound] and running a short chain so the rear wheel is further forward solved the problem [it effectivly lowers spring rate when doing that so you have to re-do rear sag or maybe even put a firmer rear spring in depending how much preload is wound on with your current spring]..getting your pressures right for winter racing is quite important for grip and tyre life aswell..as often on cold tracks the tyres will run lower temp that what they were on the warmers..so the presure raise because of heat is less.
If you want some good advice on Pirelli slicks..talk to Dennis Shaw if he is there on the day with Robert Taylor [ohlins camp] he worked alot with andrew stroud using Pirelli slicks and is a very clever man full stop!!
Cheers Poos, looks like my decision has been made for me anyway, just been out in shed to get everything sorted and had a closer look at the sc2 on the back, its kinda a bit low on one side so thats left me with the sc0,its on now so will have to hope for a really hot day
Too late to worry about it now I guess,on with the racing![]()
Ohh SHIT!!!!!!! The Napier Taupo roads just been closed, flooding and rocks near Te Pohue and a big slip blocking both lanes near the Mohaka bridge.......................................SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What a great meeting. Huge fields (to me anyway) and the day went extremely smoothly. We had a couple of races with some spectacular bins, but as far as I know, no hospital trips were required.
Much kudos to those who made it possible by marshalling, bossing us around and providing the organisational infrastructure on the day to make this do-able. The last two weeks before the meeting were fairly full-on with people like Shirley (BMW) working hard despite illness, others stepping into unfamiliar roles, and others being pulled out of retirement to fill some gaps. Nigel from The Pacific MCC also stepped up and organised flag marshalls, as our usual crew chief is also recovering from illness.
Much of the team providing the muscle on the day are now from Kiwi Biker, with several stepping up for the first time on the day. Many many thanks to the first timers and the more crusty volunteers. I daren't risk naming everyone for fear of missing someone, but I suspect that I can safely say that all the racers appreciate what you do.
