My mate Gavin had MOTSUX on his RX3. Surfice to say he was hounded off the road. It used to live in Petone. Poor Ol Gav wasn't the brightest crayola in the caddy, nor the sharpest.

This is from a taken from a post on a different site where there's a discussion about Personalised Plates. The issue there is about the Euro spec plates (longer than normal with a pic). PP charge $399 (not personalised) and germanplates.co.nz charge $29(USD).

    The relevant portions are Sections: 8, 9, 9E2, 14 & 17.

Section 8: The registrar shall register your vehicle and issue 'original' plates.

Section 9: Personalised plates. Of note are 9.2: The Registrar may enter into a contract with any person entitling that person to dispose of the right to receive personalised registration plates. & 9.4: There shall not be more than one contract under this section in force at any one time. Meaning, Personalised Plates have a legislated monopoly of the registration process and the issuing of 'original' p/plates.

Section 9E2: Details that only symbols etc. approved by the registrar (Ministry of Transport), can be displayed on a plate.

Section 14: Deals with how the form and colour of the plates. Any changes by the Transport Minister and announced in the Government Gazette.

Section 17: Deals with unauthorised, obscure and deceptive plates. i.e bogus rego, deceptive characters such as the Mini I saw Friday night, άITIά. The fine for this is $200.

As for the plate description, that's detailed here: Specifically colour and letter/number combination. For non p/plates one is limited to embossed silver on black or embossed black on retro-reflective white. It doesn't even mention the size of the plate, I haven't found those regs yet.

That's all the applicable legislation for rego plates in NZ. You are required to register a vehicle and receive the plates. It doesn't say anywhere that you cannot affix a facsimile thereof. Should wish to present your recent plate as silver on black, you're within the law, unless it's ap/plate.

However they can have you on the additional characters and/or symbols as per Section 9E2. But as long as the plates meet the criteria re colour and material, they can't touch you.

I fail to see how a plate can have a "tradeable comodity"price built into it . especially if it says something naff like "4 u dad"
i bought one off trade me for $250.00. the owner tried to sell it for the best part of a year, so they are hardley sort after.still neat to have if thats what yanks ya chain.

Or the fact they purchased their plate back when it cost $300 and no-one else can have it? Hmmmm, seems like a complete waste of money - NOT. I orginaly purchased this for my car (MX5 - Aye Frosty!) but also acknowledged the fact that motorbikes were only allowed 5 characters.

BTW I have the plate '28E Z' for sale if anyone is interested.

    Bumping up.

Was looking at a plate and chucking ideas around, wanted & could get GSX86,but that would only be good for bike at present,so thought YNOT,nope n/a but a few variances, then surname(5 characters max for bike)but most taken bugger, then eureka something simple "I BT IT" stands for I Beat It,for beating cancer, corny as but wtf.Wanted to add message but can't on the bike, then afterwards was playing with YNOTZ available so have option on either as plate not manufactured yet,so small time to change yet if wanting too.
