From the time of the sailing ship until the spread of the mall and 24/7 shopping - the place to be and be seen in Auckland was Queen St.Whether you were cruising up and down on 2 wheels or 4,or beating the footpath....it was the ultimate aim of all Aucklanders.

In the '70's the place to park your bike was outside 246.....and before that it was at the Civic Theatre.Also in those days of late night friday shopping - you did the rounds of the bike shops to buy parts....Whites if you had a Triumph,or Bill Russell's if you had a BSA or Norton.I don't know what the riders of Jap bikes did in those days - if you rode a Jap bike back then you were a nobody,and I didn't want to be one of those!

Personally I like to do my spots off the exhaust right where it comes from the head, thats the hottest part -vaporises good, especially after giving the bike a good cane around the block revving its tits off to get it nice and red hot

In the UK, 1970s, early 80s, people used to ride their bikes for miles and meet at Matlock Bath in Derbyshire for no reason whatsoever. Eat, then disappear. It was a nice ride out and great to see every type of bike imaginable. There was never any trouble, no gang stuff, mostly groups of 1-3 riders only, and I should know as my family lived in/near that area for years. Over time it slowly waned and I doubt there is anyone there at all these days.

Is there anywhere like that here in NZ? It would be good to 'claim' a spot and just go there and park up for a short time. I have seen a few bikes up after Orewa, off the main road somewhere towards a place beginning with P maybe - can't remember, but there is a pub there. Not that I drink.

The equivalent to Matlock would be a place like Mission Bay, you know, like, 1000 bikers stealing all the parking spots. Surely wouldn't go down too well though. Is there anywhere like that here?

I notice a lot of you guys are recommending odd pubs and such but what rock the boat is talking about is taking over a small town, in a friendly way of course.

For arguments sake , lets say the water front at Taupo, Pie shops, chip shops, bars, ample parking, nice view. Peeps and bikes from all over descend on the place on a Sunday. Independent ride outs all over central north Island , then people use Taupo as a focus to end up at and gather with loads of others. Stroll round each others rides have a pie then bugger off from whence they came. If everyone behaves well, the locality prospers.

I'm not actually suggesting Taupo but that kinda thing. It works Quite well, I'd love to see it take off here.

That's a great idea, pity I live in Christchurch. For your info there's a cafe that I've been to twice in the last 3 months in Taupo. Can't remember it's name to save my life but the owner is a big englishman with a goatee who wears a bandana. When he sees bikes he drools. A real good bastard, food is fantastic! My two cents worth. BTW, the cafe has bi-folding windows that face the lake, great for babe watching.

Thats what we meen. In wellington they use to go most Sundays. meet somewhere go for a ride to a little place give them some money in exchange for food and drinks then ride home again.
Didnt matter how fast or slow your bikes were it was a fun get to geather.
I hope they do that here in Auckland.

As Mikkel said Akaroa(It is a town). The waterfront in front off the main shops, bars, cafes are overtaken by bikes mainly in Summer but it is very rare to turn up there & not find another bike around.
