Probably a good decision to turn around on the Makairo, its quite easy to
put a foot wrong there and end up down the bank.

You just needed a big GS behind to help you along

Last year I went in from the east end in winter on the 660 and the mud was bad - I came within a gnats tit of dropping the bike over the steep bank as I turned the bike around - scared myself sh*tliss - so I know what you mean.

Am keen to have another attempt when things dry out if you are interested (plus ride all those lovely roads around Pongaroa....)

I'll be a starter, the Makairo is always a great adventure

I'd have to go in from the tui end, I don't think I'd make it up from the
other side. A few of those ruts had the GS sliding down on the cylinders
rather than the wheels.

Good Stuff! The Napier-Taihape is a great ride on a good day.

I reckon a "Farewell Annie" ride is in order before it gets paved & clogged up with trucks, campervans & highway patrol.

I think its more fun in winter (provided its not raining) - no dust and the traction on these damp well swept roads was awesome (apart from one minor bit...)

Was quite a bit of road works going on on the Taihape side so the desecration isn't far off I wouldn't think..

What you call disappointing we may call interesting....

I use what my son calls shotgun photography - if I stop to take a photo I take 6-10 in quick succession with little thought to composition or framing. After the 3 days away I had taken over 300 photos. about 10% are disasters, about 80% are 'meh' and the final 5-10% are hopefully worth looking at. I get my son to help choose the ones to post as hes got the artists eye.
