Gear Indicator

I am tossing up idea of making my own gear indicator, why cause i can, and something different.

unsure if i head down the number route or use leds to show 1-6 gears

aka the two styles

Or another long term opinion is actually building it in the dash



have seen a number one in the dash also underneth the tacho area

edit: I'd be more worried why I need a gadget to tell me what gear I'm in

Be curious to know how you'll do it. Switches sensing the gear change? ... or a micro working out your speed/revs ratio to calculate the gear.

suzuki a certian ohm, tells you what gear you are in, aka when you put a 2800ohm resistor in tells you in 5th gear sorta thing(TRE)

found a couple of schematic for suzuki based ones, so give it a go

yeah, not to hard to start off with, i got a few things i want to do my way.

and then long term wiring in to the dash be interesting if i go down that route be complex

Of the two I think the digit one might be the more practical but a bit hard to say. You should have fun anyway

Which ever way you do it it might pay to make sure it's not too bright or adjustable brightness???. I find the fuel LED on mine really annoying riding at night cause it's so bright.

Agree with dhunt - brightness is def a consideration - the ST has a dimmer on its instrumentation, and so does my RADAR display - when things get dark, bright LEDS etc really suck your periphial vision.

Great idea tho Cajun, - the # of times I try for another gear cos its pulling so easily.....

I prefer the line of lights - the digit display looks a bit cheap IMO

Prob with line of LEDs is that unless you can see which ones aren't turned on, its pretty hard to see which one is lit... esp when ambient light is dim/dark.

Personally, I wouldn't mind just having an indicator LED that came on in first and top gear.

95% of time i do, normally when sorta being lazy crusing i forget, and being a 600 handy known what gear in if need to pass, and its just something different, no idea if i even like riding with one or not.

Jaycar has a number of kits for rev indication, gear indication etc. It might be a good starting point for you. Most of them come with a light sensitive resistor that will dim the leds for you come darkness.

I'm building a gear change indicator from one of their kits at the moment. It's good fun!
