Angry KTM NZ needs slugshot up its arse

Currently looking into replacing the zx10 with something naked perhaps... keep hold of that damned elusive license. The 990 supermoto, just released this year has certainly caught my eye, looking like a very capable, almost mythical do-all bike. Considering I barely ever ride more than one bike before buying anything, I thought I might do it right this time... and decided to seriously look at the superduke as well, having already ridden a tuono.

I contacted my local KTM (lets call it store 1) and they didn't hold them on the floor, and they recommended I contact AMPS, as store 1 was some what ... restricted by NZ HQ, so could get one in if I was certain I wanted that, plus, they wouldn't trade my 10 (I like convenience).

OK... I was never particularly a fan of AMPS, I consider them a bit stuck up and snooty, but in I went. First visit wasn't too bad, they were being shipped to NZ etc. Second visit, more than half an hour, not a single sales person approached me, despite me doing all but dis-assembling it. Third visit went much better, one was on the floor, not sold, but I wanted to demo. Salesperson would locate one, and let me know. 2 weeks later, no contact, turns out he is out of the country on a short trip, but no-one knows what progress there has been. Its possible KTM NZ won't provide one?

Phoned up another dealer in Aucks, lets say store 2. They tell me they are not allowed to deal with the lc8 range (690 bikes are the lc4 engine, adventure, superduke, supermoto 990 bikes use the vtwin lc8 engine), by KTM NZ, and its best I contact AMPS.

Well KTM NZ, I really want a ktm demo, back to back, but you are currently doing a damn fine job of fucking me off, and I was already aware you had ridiculous margins. I believe you are the only branch in the world not controlled by KTM HQ. Lets hope this is fixed soon.

I won't go too off topic, as this is a KTM NZ hating thread , but in brief...

Was the standard, fantastic handling, very very easy to flick from side to side. Could have been a practically brand new engine, but there was a gap between opening the throttle and the actual response that killed it for me (used to instant response, and expect it). Its also far less practical when it comes to carrying luggage, tank range isn't huge (eg, supermoto has a 19L tank), and its really a road bike, naked sportsbike perhaps. Supermoto has more possibilities for off road.

Must be Aussie and us, as NZ branch is owned/run by Aussie.
Why not give Boyd's a call in Hamilton?

Yes, I believe that is the case.. forgotten the name of the people that sort out KTM nz/au.

Don't really want to go out of town, easier to deal with Auckland, as I want to trade the 10, they probably want all the bits for it as well etc, but very shortly, yeah, I will contact Hamilton. I wonder if KTM NZ restricts them as well? Also, I have planned a very good test route to fully test the bikes... which involves specific auckland roads and corners.

Birthday on the 12th of August, want a nice birthday present ... and I have been wanting to try the supermoto since December/January (it only arrived in april/may iirc).

edit: Boyds or any dealer in Hamilton are not listed under dealers on ktm.co.nz. Are they an official dealer of KTM?

It's owned by Jeff Leisk - former MX Champ.

Interesting that KTM NZ's website doesn't even list the 990 SM, whereas Aussie's does....hmmmm
Maybe it's worth contacting KTM NZ direct: http://www.ktm.co.nz/index.php?id=3&...eba8c7173bdc6c

If I wanted to speak to them... I know where the HQ is in East Tamaki, its under 20min from both home and work. S'pose I should probably speak to them... do I trust myself not to shout at their obvious efforts to favour one dealer, and cobble the guys that are genuinely good...

edit: the 950SM was last years model, however, the 950 SMR is continued through to this year, while they sell old stock afaik. Don't even know if a 990 SMR is actually planned. Also more complex is that the USA for example, is not planned to have the 990SM at all.

I stand corrected... even KTM International know about Boyds... but not the local site? Some webmaster needs a kick

I feel for that bugger (edit... I wondered if that was a past owner, the PP were a clue)... its been on the market for ages, I've had my eye on it long time... but I need to ride the superduke and supermoto back to back. Because of my road background, I think the superduke could be suitable, however, the supermoto is like a heavy motard, which is reliable... and that idea is immensely fun, plus it has luggage options, longer suspension travel etc.

i dont, if he had a more realistic price on it 6 months ago it would be sitting in my garage instead of this shitty old Triumph.

its an awesome bike, being the R version means the seat is abit hard and your arse takes a pounding (but not in a honda riding way).

mmm the pipes are not cheap... can't remember if it has the full system, or slip ons... at least the rc8 full system is more expensive... (Laughably so).

Also means no pillions... so no chicks... aaaah mmmmm yes. Have heard the R is a bit stiff all round, can probably change the setup a little... but yeh, just not quite what I am after.
