    SH40 Condition???

Gidday, planning a wee pootle and have been looking at maps. Interested to hear what State Highway 40 from Ahititi to Ohura is like. Looks like it's got some corners but has it got gravel or anything nasty?

Any locals with some info they'd care to share?

    Cheers

It's a few years since I drove that road but it was mostly gravel then and I suspect it still will be. My Kiwi Minimap states "Narrow Winding Road" for both ends and 'The Waitaangas' have had a local reputation for rugged territory since way back.

The East Taranaki is not the most stable of terrain at the best of times so be wary of slips and washouts if you're planning your jaunt in the near future, and especially this weekend.

Alternatives (not knowing your route) would be SH43 which only has about 12kms unsealed (but hard packed usually) from Tahora north, or SH4 Taumarunui to just south of Te Kuiti is all sealed good road.

On your Concourse? You'd be mad.
Do you realise how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them?

Yes, I took that road on Sunday - 90% gravel, but not the hard packed kind, the course loose stuff, tight corners, some quite narrow. There's quite a few potholes too. The Ohura to SH4 section is good though. Tar seal all the way and good surface with some twisties, but as on all these back roads, just watch out for wandering stock.

Thanks for that, sounds like I may have to change the plan a bit. Have ridden the Ohura to SH4 section - was looking for a new road...
