so, did u buy one of these?
what are they like? do u reckon they are quite robust / reliable??
cheap as chips.. im tempted.
Hiya, I used to have a Honda SS50 back in the days after Noah landed his ark on the mountains of Ararat. I took a ride on my neighbour's NZ50 the uther day and it's the same thang. Reliable as tax and death. If my memo serves me rite, I think the SS couldn't do 80 on a straight. This NZ50 has a cool color too. I stumbled upon the website and found the spider - http://www.nzmotorbikes.co.nz/
I'm also quite interested in one of these bikes. Should make a more fun commute than a scooter. I would only be riding in 50 km/hr areas, and getting moped registration ($70/year rego and no wofs) make it a preety sweet deal.
How many people here have got one, and what are the impressions about build quality?
Its diametrically opposed to the sanitised existence of the Lemmings around me in the Dilbert Cartoon hell I live in; its life at full volume, perfect colour with high resolution and 10,000 watts of amplification.
The law still sees it as a motorbike. False statement on the website about it being classed as a moped. I'm not sure about the power output on it, but it's already breaking one of the moped requirements by having a top speed over 50km/h. You 'may' be able sneak it through the system and register as a moped, but if you ever get done for going over 50, then you're a little caught out.
It is damn cheap though.
Thanks, that's certainly something to think about. Who would be the official people to ask about this, LTSA or the police? The stock power output and speed is declared by the dealer as 2kW and 50 km/hr (without modifications). Is it regarded as a motorbike based just on design?
I have also been thinking about a 2 stroke scooter. Many dealers say they can be registered as mopeds and that they can reach 60 or so on the flat, so it seems like the rules get a bit bent in this area. Does anyone know how strict the cops are?
I work in an outdoor power equipment shop (chainsaws and stuff) and we're looking at selling motors fitted to pushbikes (they are entertaining, sort of, the motor kits are already available, we will just fit them) and called LTSA for information about the legality of the idea, they seemed to be the right people to call.
And the moped limits are 2.0kW, 50km/h and 50cc or less. If it meets those 3, then whatever the shape, it's a moped (if it doesn't meet one of the 3, then it's a motorbike).
It's also worth mentioning that a scooter is not the same thing as a moped. Scooter is the design, moped is the classification.
